Someone else may have already posted this news, but Rupert Heath, founder of Dean Street Press, has passed away.

There‘s more about him, and the future of #FurrowedMiddlebrow books, on the FM blog:

http://furrowedmiddlebrow.blogspot.com/2023/03/the-ides-of-march.html

I emailed Rupert about a Susan Scarlett ARC, and he couldn‘t have been nicer and more patient in figuring out the right format for me.

Ruthiella That‘s sad to hear. He leaves behind a legacy of wonderful books he helped make available to readers. 2y
willaful Oh no. I'm sad for everyone's loss and also sad for our loss of FM. 😢 2y

jlhammar Oh, how sad. And no more FM reprints to come 😪 2y
LeahBergen I‘m glad you posted this as I was just about to do it! It‘s so very sad. There will be no more Furrowed Middlebrow books to come but our little club can still work through the 96 that have been printed. I‘ll tag the rest of our club to make sure we all see this: @catebutler @elkeOriginal @erzascarletbookgasm @quietjenn @CarolynM @Cathythoughts @batsy @Kimzey @Jess_Read_This 2y
CarolynM Thanks for posting @rubyslippersreads and thanks for tagging everyone @LeahBergen I was so sad when I heard the news, first about Amanda and then Rupert. DSP must be a thriving little business. Maybe someone will want to fold it into their little publishing house in due time. We can only hope. 2y
LeahBergen @CarolynM Yes, I‘m hoping for something like that, too. 😢 2y
rubyslippersreads @CarolynM @LeahBergen I hope that will happen too. 2y
batsy Oh no, that is so sad. 54 is way too young. 😞 I'm not sure if he was the one tweeting under the FM account or if he occasionally did but I got the impression of an incredibly nice and approachable person. @CarolynM I hope that it's a possibility. DSP was such a lovely idea and it'll be such a loss without more reprints. 2y
CarolynM @batsy The FM account is Scott Thompson who wrote the tagged blog post. He's the force behind the FM imprint while Rupert was the publisher. 2y
batsy @CarolynM Ah, OK! Thank you for clearing that up. 2y
Kimzey How terribly sad! Thank you for letting us know. 😢 2y
Cathythoughts So sad. Yes 54 is way too young @batsy. I‘m so glad we are all part of FM and will have read the 96 books @LeahBergen It will be a poignant reading experience now. I hope DSP will continue somehow @CarolynM 2y
Jess_Read_This It‘s a such a tragedy. I also read Scott‘s post just now that there will be no more Furrowed Middlebrow reprints. 😕 I‘m glad our group will continue reading together though! Thank you for tagging me @LeahBergen 2y
erzascarletbookgasm Sad news indeed. Thanks for tagging the FM gang @LeahBergen . I‘m glad to be part of FM club too @Cathythoughts 2y

I thoroughly enjoyed my first Furrowed Middlebrow read. Charming, funny, moving, and filled with wonderful details of life in England following WWII. I was quite taken with the writing; there are some positively striking passages in here. So glad #DeanStreetPress reissued this autobiographical novel for new readers to discover.

Tamra Middlebrow seems such a delightful collection of republications! 😊 2y

jlhammar @Tamra Agreed! I can‘t wait to try others. 2y
jlhammar @batsy @LeahBergen @Ruthiella @Cathythoughts @MrsK @Jess_Read_This Thanks! It has been a lot of fun sharing this reading experience with all of you. Looking forward to Thalia in November! 2y

Mrs. Lorimer's Quiet Summer | MOLLY. CLAVERING
post image

@LeahBergen Have you read Molly Clavering?
She was friend and neighbor of DE Stevenson and several of her novels recently came out from #FurrowedMiddleBrow #DeanStreetPress too.

This one is supposedly a thinly veiled portrayal of their friendship. I enjoyed imagining it WAS them!
(The tagged book is the same as the one in my photo)

Leftcoastzen Very cool! 3y
LeahBergen What a great edition! I have this one (under the other title) but haven‘t got to it yet. I ONLY got it this past summer. 🤣 3y
LeahBergen Oh, and I have a couple of the Furrowed Middlebrow editions of her books. One was a Twitter prize and I bought the other that was a sequel to it. 😊 3y
elkeOriginal @LeahBergen I look forward to Molly‘s books popping up in #furrowedmiddlebrowclub 😉 3y

Reviewing my 2021 reading and found I made a good dent in my #furrowedmiddlebrow TBR stack from #deanstreetpress.
The tagged book was a favorite for sure but they are all fascinating gems in their own ways. So glad these are being regularly reprinted!
And thanks to @Jess_Read_This for enabling me in these purchases and buddyreading many of these with me! Now to check on the titles pubbing in January 2022 because, of course 🤦🏼‍♀️
#bestof2021

Jess_Read_This I still need to read 😬 3y
elkeOriginal @Jess_Read_This You do! 😉 It is a fun comedy of errors! (edited) 3y

LeahBergen 🤣🤣 I love a good book mail day! We generally start our read sometime in the beginning of the month and aim to talk about it on each other‘s posts starting from around the 15th of the month. It‘s very low key! 3y
elkeOriginal @LeahBergen Awesome! Just ordered 3y

CarolynM These books look so lovely! When am I going to find time for them all? 4y
Centique Oh they‘re delicious looking! 😍 4y
batsy @rockpools So true! 😁 4y
batsy Aah, they do their covers so well! 4y
quietjenn I think I bought most of these releases as well, as ebooks! 4y
LeahBergen @rockpools Right?? And, even better? It‘s the name of the village in this book. 😆 4y
LeahBergen @CarolynM Sigh. I have so many of them still TBR and yet I keep buying more. 😆 4y
LeahBergen @quietjenn Do you follow Dean Street Press on Twitter? They offer one of their releases as a free e-book each week. 😊 4y
quietjenn @LeahBergen oo, no! My Twitter is very neglected but that would be worth paying attention to! 4y

Miss Mole | Emily Hilda Young
post image

I‘m currently reading this 1930 oldie that has just been republished by #FurrowedMiddlebrow and #DeanStreetPress today.

Miss Mole has spent 20 years of her life as a companion to old women when she accepts a housekeeper position with a pompous minister and his needy children. I‘m liking Hannah Mole so far; she‘s cheekier and wiser than she lets on and I think she‘ll be turning this house around in no time!

erzascarletbookgasm Oh yes, I saw DSP has reprinted 6 titles this month. This one sounds promising 👍 4y
LeahBergen @erzascarletbookgasm It started off a bit slow for me (the first two chapters) but then I very quickly got into it after that. I‘m so looking forward to the other books being published this month! 4y
CarolynM Sounds good. Another one for the stack. 4y
LeahBergen @CarolynM I‘m really warming to Miss Mole! It took me a little while to get into the writing style/subtle humour of this book but it‘s worth it. 4y

My current buddy read with @shawnmooney .

Written and set at the beginning of WWII, this is the whimsically humorous story of two women on the Home Front. Caroline, a ‘modern‘ Londoner is evacuated to the countryside and ends up billeting with her (very different) old school chum, Constance.

Both Shawn and I loved this author‘s first novel, Begin Again, and we are already enthralled with this one. 😊

MsMelissa Another book with an awesome cover! One day I‘m going to visit and peruse your books in person 😊 4y
erzascarletbookgasm Sounds like a witty read! Also drooling at the others in the background 😍 4y
LeahBergen @Book_Fiend_Melissa And you might even like these editions. They‘re not used (vintage). 😂😂 4y

CarolynM This is on my #bookspinbingo card this month. Looking forward to reading it, and to your thoughts about it🙂 (edited) 4y
Reviewsbylola Y‘all do so many interesting buddy reads! 4y
LeahBergen @batsy This one‘s calling your name. 😆 4y
LeahBergen @BookNAround I think you‘ll like it! 😘 4y
LeahBergen @CarolynM Oo, I hope you get to it. It has much of the same feel/tone as Begin Again. 😊 4y
LeahBergen @Reviewsbylola We do! We seem to alternate between oldies like this and royal bios. 😆 4y
Cathythoughts I think I‘ll try that first one first 👍🏻 Begin again ✨📚 4y

LibrarianToujours Nice pencil 😉 5y
rubyslippersreads Is that one of those lovely Blackwing pencils? 5y
LeahBergen @erzascarletbookgasm I do, too! And I‘ve (shamefully) bought so many of them. 😆 5y
LeahBergen @catebutler It‘s a bit hard-going at first (with a lot of rambling and yet charming memories of the narrator‘s childhood) but then it really picked up for me and I ended up giving it 4 ⭐️s. Have you read anything else by this author? I really enjoyed the quirky and weird 5y
LeahBergen @batsy I think it might be your cup of tea, too (see above comment). 😁 5y
LeahBergen @NHLibrarian @rubyslippersreads Thanks and it is. I actually didn‘t know this one glowed in the dark until I went to sleep with it on my bedside table the other night. 😆 5y
Centique That cover appeals and then your description sealed it! 😍 5y
erzascarletbookgasm Have you read any by Elizabeth Fair and Doris Langley Moore? Which ones should I start with? 5y
LeahBergen @Centique 😘😘 5y
LeahBergen @erzascarletbookgasm I have all the Elizabeth Fairs but haven‘t read one yet. 😆 I was just looking at them and thinking she‘ll be the next one I try. I just bought a Doris Langley Moore which sounds good (Not At Home) and I have an old hardcover of All Done By Kindness but haven‘t tried this author yet either. Of the ones I HAVE tried... I loved Begin Again by Ursula Orange, Alice by Elizabeth Eliot, the Mrs Tim books by DE Stevenson and 👇🏻 5y
LeahBergen @erzascarletbookgasm that‘s all I can think of right at the moment. 😘 5y
erzascarletbookgasm Ooooh, I have Alice and Begin Again on my shelves. I think I got them after seeing your post and Sisilia‘s. And I look forward to your thoughts on Elizabeth Fair. 😊 Thanks for the info. 5y
rubyslippersreads I went to buy this book and realized I had it and several others by Rachel Ferguson on my iPad, due to Dean Street Press giving away a free ebook (almost) every week. 😊 5y

I‘m currently reading another #FurrowedMiddlebrow book by #DeanStreetPress.

There was a bit too much of the inner workings of the Church of England at the beginning of this novel in diary form (for my taste), but it‘s now shaping up nicely with some witty scenes of 1930s village life. 👍🏻

Aimeesue Furrowed Middlebrow! That name cracks me up every time. 😂 5y
