Pickpick

Read for my dissertation...and made me very paranoid about whether I'm critiquing in my writing! Instead of reading with suspicion and detachment, trying to ferret out the secrets or expose the gaps in a book, Felski advocates for a postcritical reading that embraces affect and the cocreation of meaning between text and reader. Will work perfectly in my chapter about the emotional aspects of immersion not being opposed to scholarly reading!

I bought this shortly after the 2016 elections. The title described my thoughts. Then I put the book on my shelf because I was feeling too raw. Recently I thought, “I‘d better read this before it‘s obsolete.” Well, the good news is, it isn‘t likely to ever be 100% obsolete. If you read politically, try this book. For me, every essay was worth the time.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Oh my gosh! I did the same and it is still sitting in my shelf! 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa That‘s funny! You‘ll be interested to see who the contributors are. Some have gone on to new, more public positions. 6y

This book‘s been on my shelf far too long. Even though it was compiled right after the 2016 election, the concerns still exist. Obvi. And I‘m proud to say I got through 90 pages without feeling sick to my stomach. But that‘s all for today ... back to Mary Oliver poems until I feel like I can continue with this book. #resistlist #readersresist #somedaysitsalltoomuchtoabsorb #notmypresident

Mehso-so

I love the idea of this book but am less thrilled with the execution. It is contradictory in places and overall not tremendously helpful. Additionally, it hasn‘t aged well.

The book tagged is actually an older edition as this edition appears not to be in the database.

I thought this collection was stunning for the most part. I particularly enjoyed the essays by George Saunders, Dave Eggars, Linda Sarsour, Rabbi Sharon Klienbaum, and M. Dove Kent.

He's an efficient bigot. I'll admit.

Notafraidofwords It's literally anxiety producing. My nightmares have gotten worse and I have gained about 40 pounds from stress eating. Oh and I worry about the people I love on a constant basis. Oh and cry atleast once a day. 7y

I keep trying to give Gloria Steinem chances to show me that her feminism is intersectional so I can cape for her. She keeps disappointing me. I'm gonna keep 😒. #CantEven #Skipped

moranadatter I had mixed feelings about it, but if any one essay annoys you or doesn't suit your mood, you can always turn the page and get to a better one. 7y

#JuneBookBugs Day 1 - June Most Anticipated

These are some of the books I'm most anticipating reading in June. Actually, it looks like I'm having a bit of a "Social Justice June" theme with my reading this month, including books about immigration, corruption, slavery, political action, and other relevant themes.
