The Bear: A Novel | Claire Cameron

Tonight‘s bedtime story- it is not on Litsy sadly. In the UK we have an incredibly consumerist tradition of feeling Christmas has truly begun when that years John Lewis (a department store) advert comes on TV. They are a master of pulling in the heart strings and choosing excellent songs to cover. And they always make a book to go with the advert. My boys love this one #WGword search 240 pts #wintergames #teamgamesleighers

This was really interesting between the storyline and the writing. I am already afraid of getting lost in the woods and the critters who live there, but this takes it to a whole different level because it feels so real. It‘s written in the same style as Room from the perspective of a young child. It really captures the raw emotion of fear and terror that can be found when you need to survive.

Santhoshthomas Good naration 6y
allureofbeauty I got this at the dollar store but I haven‘t read it yet. 6y
Victoriahoperose @allureofbeauty that‘s a steal! I really liked it! 6y

I cannot even begin to convey just how awful this book is. I hated the children, who happen to be the main characters, and prayed the bear would eat them so the book would end and put me out of my misery. I cannot believe this will go down as the first book I read in 2019. Awful.

Good morning! I'm currently trudging through a book that I thought would get me out of my reading rut, but I'm about halfway through and so not feeling it.

A horrifying account of a bear attack on a remote island in Algonquin Park, told in the voice of 5-year-old Anna as she struggles to care for her little brother after their parents are mauled to death.

Read November 30 - December 2
Book 48/50

(Cute dog in lieu of a book picture I forgot to take!)

4 ☆ Holy cow.. based off a true story in Algonquin Park Ontario. Bear was a mixed bag for me. I enjoyed the rollercoaster ride of emotion I felt.. so good but oh so painful to read. Idk how many times while reading I thought of my own little ones, the what if‘s.. all as told by Anna age 5.. so heartbreaking but genius to use a child‘s voice.
Thanks @erzascarletbookgasm for another unforgettable book - thats 2 for 2! 🤓👍🏻

tammysue @Joyfulmimi @StillLookingForCarmenSandiago This has all the feels.. I had to take a L O N G break before starting another book after finishing it. I haven‘t read Room yet even though I have the book. I‘ve heard it‘s a highly emotional heart-wrenching story. 6y
tammysue @erzascarletbookgasm Was very good Jessie although a tough read for me! Now onto Book 6 👍🏻😁 6y
Ingerella I just downloaded it from Hoopla. I loved Room so I hope I will enjoy this one too. 6y

This is honestly hard to read. I‘m completely loving it, but it‘s just so heart wrenching to read from the perspective of a 5 year old girl, who‘s trying to survive with her 3 year old brother in Algonquin Park after her parents were attacked by a black bear.

robinb Oh man...I‘m not sure I could handle that one! 😔 6y
EH2018 I read this, thought it was well constructed, but really difficult to recommend 6y
laurenlovesliterature My mom read this and she felt exactly the same way. 6y

I had four credits on Hoopla that I had to use before the end of the month. I chose four books that are in my physical shelf so I can read the book, and listen to the audiobook at the same time. Here‘s what I chose. Book 4/4 ☺️ I‘ve heard mixed things about this book, but I‘m a sucker for books told in the perspective of children.

Have any of you guys read this one? What did you think?

BookishTrish I liked it. I don‘t remember always believing the narrator was a child, but I loved The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon and this plays a similar field 6y
JennyM It was a good few years ago that I read it, but I think I bailed. 6y
Prairiegirl_reading I‘m claustrophobic and it was terrifying to me. I liked it over all though. 6y

Similar to the book Room, in that it's written from a young child's perspective. But it has bears!

Prairiegirl_reading This book is terrifying! If you are claustrophobic be warned! 7y
Prairiegirl_reading It‘s really good though! 7y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @Prairiegirl_reading That part totally made me gag. In a good way? I like it when books affect me physically. 7y
Prairiegirl_reading Oh yeah. Like I couldn‘t breathe!!! I had to finish and then I had to put the book away and back away from it! Lol! 7y
EH2018 It made me feel kind of guilty to recommend it - tough read. There was something mesmerizing about it though 7y
