The good news is this was a compelling and interesting story. It‘s 1922 in St. Louis, and the MC gets inadvertently involved in investigating the murder of a player for a local Negro League team. He finds out more than he expected about the racism and violence of the KKK and segregation. There‘s also a little personal crisis in his life.

The bad news is I can‘t find the next installment. Not insurmountable but inconvenient.

I had several 5 star reads for November, including The Talk by Darrin Bell and Escape from St. Hell by Lewis Hancock (both graphic memoirs.) I picked this because it's such a .... me kind of book.

A cute graphic with differing interests portrayed. Themes such as the importance of communication and acceptance between friends and family members.

I start Tuesday as a weekly volunteer reading picture books aloud to two UTK classes. This morning I'm prepping: practicing my voices, coming up with questions to engage the students, reviewing strategies for working with wiggly 4-year-olds. I'm pretty excited!

I am Jackie Robinson | Brad Meltzer

This biography would be a great tool in the classroom to inform readers of such a major name in our country when it comes to racial equality and the game if baseball. Students could use this to write about challenging times in their lives and how they overcame it.

Pickpick

The serendipity of baseball and aging engulfs this short narrative about an estranged father and son that reads like a Vin Scully anecdote between pitches of an at bat. Grisham‘s story won‘t change your life, but - like a good ball game - makes for a nice couple of hours.
