#audies2017
blurb
Megabooks

I didn't particularly appreciate this deluded, racist jackhole winning the at the #Audies2017 for best #nonfiction. Setting aside the fact that I found the book intolerable, his performance was one of the worst in a category full of amazing vocal performances. 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻 Audie judges. Anyone who can come up with a 130 character mean tweet about it will forever have my gratitude! @Notafraidofwords ??

Notafraidofwords I can't thing of anything besides the fact that one day he will run for office and neither one of us will vote for him. 7y
Tamra I haven't read it and it's still sitting in my stacks, precisely for the reasons you cited. I wish I hadn't forked over the $ for a new copy. 😐 7y
Aswenson I went back and forth with hating and understanding him. I feel like he basically explained why unintelligent southerners believe certain things b/c they don't know any better, but he just goes ahead and believes them too. 7y

Aluciddreamstate I wanted to read this especially after I read/listened to White Trash by Isenburg. Slightly more intrigued to read it now so I can also fume/understand the blight. 7y
Megabooks @Notafraidofwords 👍🏻👍🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 7y
Megabooks @Tamra Same here! I wish I didn't own the audiobook! 7y
Megabooks @Aswenson He has no idea what he's talking about, imo. He strung together a bunch of family anecdotes and tried to generalize them. I don't appreciate him pretending to understand Kentucky when he just vacationed there. (I'm a Kentuckian.) His generalizations about Southerns plus his own micro aggressions are what drive me nuts. So we sort of agree. 🤔 (edited) 7y
Megabooks @Aluciddreamstate White Trash, which I've also read, is much better because at least she did research. I wish her research had been more in depth, but it was still a better book. 7y
LauraJ As someone who grew up as white trash, I was unimpressed. However, the middle class people in my book club found the book to be a revelation. 7y
Sue I haven't listened to the book, but I confess a number of the winners left me confused. But agree with you about the content 💯 7y
Megabooks @LauraJ Really? Hmmm...maybe that's why they picked it. I guess growing up going to public county schools in Kentucky skewed my view of what other people know. But still, this is a book of anecdotes. And I wouldn't have a problem if it had been billed as such, but he falls short on any good conclusions. 7y
Megabooks @Sue Yes, it was a weird year at the Audies! At least in the humor category, my second favorite won. (That's the other category I judged.) Luvvie did do an excellent job! 7y
MyNamesParadise Omg I loved this one!! I thought he had a dry humor that was hilarious!! My mom had this kind of upbringing & traumas from her past trickled down into issues in my own life even though I'm not from that region. For people that are not familiar with that region I think it spreads awareness about how rough life can be and how fraught with emotional turmoil the family life can be! 7y
Alicia Same same same. You already said everything I felt but better so, yay! 👊🏽 7y
Megabooks @Alicia Thanks!!!! 7y

When today is Sunday and the last contender in the #SciFi category of #ArmchairAudies is only available on Audible and your credits don't renew until Saturday... Thinking about popping for an extra 3 credits and adding another #ArmchairAudies category. Fantasy? Paranormal? Hmmm... #Audies2017 🎧

BethFishReads Love it!!!!! 8y
Guildedearlobe I'm tempted to give the anthology category a look 8y
LitHousewife LOL!!! 8y

#Head2Head, 'The Dispatcher' holds its own against 'Sleeping Giants!' I found both stories intriguing and the audios well produced; but while I crave more Dispatcher adventures, I found myself okay with waiting for the sequel to 'Sleeping Giants' ('Waking Giants' due out in April.) Full reviews later this week on my blog. #ArmchairAudies #SciFi #Audies2017 🎧

Pickpick

This was an amazing audiobook. Dominic Hoffman brought each character and each continent alive through Yaa Gyasi's writing. The way this story was told made me want to keep listening. I am so very thankful that this was a #Audies2017 finalist. Sometimes it's awards and challenges like #ArmchairAudies that introduce me to some of the best books I've ever read.

There is so much to love about this audiobook. It will be hard to beat.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Awesome puzzle! 8y

#Head2Head, Scalzi's novella left me screaming for more; but Elison's post-apocalyptic vision, while heavy with import, suffered from a surfeit of story... Full reviews on my blog next week. #ArmchairAudies #Audies2017 🎧

#Head2Head, Scalzi's novella comes out ahead of Foster's novelization of Star Wars movie. Full reviews on my blog next week... #ArmchairAudies #Audies2017 🎧

Guildedearlobe I enjoyed The Dispatcher. While there are other books I feel deserved it more I think Quinto did a good job. I'm not a huge fan of the style they use for the Star Wars audios. 8y

Taking place in the near-future, "a time of miracles and wonders," the murdered are inexplicably returned to life, safe (and naked!) in their homes. Dispatchers are those that expedite certain death; and Valdez is a dispatcher who has been brought in on a case involving the disappearance of a co-worker. Instantly compelling, Quinto's performance so far is fantastic. Second title in the #ArmchairAudie SFF category. #Audies2017

moranadatter I loved Zachary Quinto's narration. I forgot at times there was just one narrator. 8y
DGRachel I enjoyed this one a lot. 8y
