pickI was a kid myself when Jaycee, age 11, was kidnapped by a husband and wife to aid his sex addiction. I do remember when she was recovered 18 years later along with two daughters who had been fathered by her captor. Written in disconnected memories, forwards and backwards in time tells a story unlike anything that could be made up. I can't begin to fathom nearly two decades of backyard captivity and the victim of sexual and narcissistic abuse.

pickMy most favourite part of the book was when Jack managed to escape from the ‘room‘ and run away from Old Nick.
My least favourite part of the book was when Old Nick would always come to the room to demand sexual needs from Ma.
What I will remember most about this book was the fact that Jack had to sleep in a hidden compartment of the room and wait until Old Nick leaves the room so that he can sleep with his Ma.
so-soA good summer read, but nothing to write home about. The pacing kept the story moving, and I was intrigued by the plot. However, the writing left something to be desired. Something about the narrator‘s tone rubbed me the wrong way, and there are a lot of clichés and predictable moments. None of the characters seemed “real,”‘and the twist was so wildly unbelievable, it took away from the story. Very readable, but not sure it was worth reading. 2⭐️
