Impossible Creatures, by Katherine Rundell (2024)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Premise: A boy gets pulled into a magical world just in time to collaborate to save it from a horrible threat.

Review: For me, this was well done but a bit of a struggle as an adult reader. The premise was very “fantasy 101”, and there were so many twists and turns that it was hard for me to keep up with the plot. ⬇️

Mattsbookaday That said, I think this speed would play better for a younger audience. It was well done and had some really interesting food for thought, but it was a wee bit of a miss for me. 1h

This reminded me of a very dear friend, an excellent listener and advisor, who told me that the stages of grief aren't linear, but come and go. It helped a lot, especially when we lost him.

🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗 WOW! This book was somehow everything I was expecting and everything I didn't know I wanted until I read it. I barely even know how to describe it, the ending is just rattling around in my head. The mystery was top-notch, and the action had me on the edge of my seat. The worldbuilding is delightful and the romance is amazing! Props to Sarah, I see why she's such a popular author 👏

I‘m posting one book a day from my massive collection. No description, no reason for why I want to read it.

repost for @StayCurious

Originally we were going to read Tower of Dawn first b/c a few sources online mentioned it would be a more emotional way to go into the final book of the series. I‘ve changed my mind and decided we will read in publication order -which means Empire of Storms first. We will start in December, reading 9 chapters a week, first check in December 8. Please let me know if you‘d like to continue on this #ToG journey with us.

“When I first got a glimpse of you,” said Morris with a smile, “I thought I had come on ahead of myself and got here first.”

Today‘s #KindredSpiritsChristmas story is “Ted‘s Double: A Christmas Folly”—like yesterday‘s tale, this one is new to me! You can find it here: https://www.fadedpage.com/books/20161232/html.php. This is the last of the stories that aren‘t in the tagged collection. ⤵️

BarbaraJean Tomorrow we‘ll read “Matthew Insists on Puffed Sleeves” (which IS in “Christmas with Anne,” or you can just read ch. 25 from Anne of Green Gables!). 14h
JenlovesJT47 This one is new to me, too. Just finished it. I enjoyed it! Love anything resembling twin shenanigans. ♥️💚♥️ 12h

A really good read. There *was* something about the MC I didn't really like, which somehow made him more "real". I also like that he realizes that a part of him is a lot like his father. The final battle felt a bit anticlimactic, which honestly doesn't surprise me, it usually is LOL. but I liked the relationship dynamics and how it all ended. It feels complete but there is a sequel. I wonder what's next #queer #trans #nonbinary

I soon noticed how lonely Icarus was and felt for him. It was really nice to follow his life and how he finally got friends.

This was a good coming-of-age story with romance, for those who want to read one.

Chapters were super short...

I appreciated this book's message, this book made me ponder some important aspects of life.

I really liked the book, but it was slightly too melodramatic to my liking.

Brownstone, by Samuel Teer (illustr. Mar Julia) (2024)
⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Premise: A New York teenager meets her father for the first time one summer and learns about her Guatemalan heritage.

Review: This is sweet and effective, if very, very simplistic. It does deal with some hard subject matter — child abandonment, biracial identities, homophobia, and gentrification — but in ways that came off a bit too easy. ⬇️
