pickThis was excellent--I'm glad #Booked2020 pushed me to seek it out. The narrator passionately and poignantly tells the story of the impact of racism, poverty, and police violence on her life as a Black teen who lives in a strong working-class Black community but goes to a mostly-White middle-class school. Great job of unpacking White racism. While it does a bit of telling where I would prefer showing, I credit that to it being a YA novel.

Loved, loved, loved this #audiobook told in verse. Like Xiomara, my teen years were also heavily religious and because of that I clashed with my mother. A lot. It‘s now just a taboo topic whenever we talk to my family.
I really hope Acevedo continues to write fiction in verse, because this was captivating and powerful from start to finish!
