Crooked Seeds: A Novel | Karen Jennings
post image
Pickpick

I loved this authors last book, An Island. In Crooked Seeds, she has written an extremely unlikable main character... and makes us care about her. Set in the near future in South Africa, as there is less and less water. There is a mystery at the heart of this book. I thought it was masterfully written. 5 🌟 ##womensprizeforfiction

BarbaraBB Great review, makes me want to read the book immediately. And I enjoyed Island 16h

A Little Trickerie | Rosanna Pike
post image

The two books I plan to read from this year‘s Women‘s Prize for Fiction longlist: A Little Trickerie by Rosanna Pike and Amma by Saraid de Silva.
A Little Trickerie came with a surprise: a signed edition!

HardcoverHearts What a nice bonus! Well done! 3w
CharlieBrookReads So funny as these are the two I started with!!Love a signed edition ❤️❤️ 2w
Leoslittlebooklife @CharlieBrookReads Charlie, you‘re here! How wonderful! ❤️ And of course we would pick the same two ones 😀! I started Amma last night, am a quarter in and so far so good. 2w

CharlieBrookReads @Leoslittlebooklife I finished both of these this week. Both so good for very different reasons. I loved the writing style of Amma and I adored the character of Tibb in A Little Trickerie. ❤️❤️ 2w
Leoslittlebooklife @CharlieBrookReads I‘m halfway in Amma, liking it but not loving it. Somehow I keep comparing it to Brotherless Night (my fault) and missing the warm writing of that one. 2w
CharlieBrookReads @Leoslittlebooklife I get that. The author is a screenwriter which I feel like comes across in both a good way and possibly a bad way too in terms of getting that connection. It‘s quite a brief book too. Have you started A Little Trickerie yet? I know you will enjoy that one. 2w
Leoslittlebooklife @CharlieBrookReads Not yet. That‘s good to hear about it, Charlie! ❤️ 2w

Mehso-so

This was not a book for me. I in general do not love books on motherhood (not being a mom myself). But I know some women who have had similar painful first years with their children and useless husbands. As always I want to know where her community is? She has no friends or family to help? This is such a terrible reality for so many women, it was painful to read here.

ChaoticMissAdventures I can see why some like this book. The writing is solid, the story for so many is relatable. But I honestly skimmed most of the book. I had zero interest in her long winded ramblings. And found the book to just be exhausting which might be the point since our narrator is also exhausted? I enjoyed the other struggling new mother story much more than this one - it was richer in symbolism I had more of a story to grasp into. 10mo
BarbaraBB Great review. I‘ve been surprised about how few people feel this way. I personally loved it but if you don‘t have kids I can‘t imagine NOT skimming it! 10mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @BarbaraBB I started skimming pretty much from the jump. I wouldn't have read it at all if it hadn't made the WP shortlist. I am genuinely surprised how few people had negative reactions to the book. I do think the last half of the book was more interesting than the first half. And it did have me make a date with a girlfriend who went through almost this exact new mom life. So I guess that is good. 10mo

BarbaraBB That‘s really good indeed. I pity your friend. I hope her husband is not as worthless as the one in the book! 10mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @BarbaraBB unfortunately he is. I think the extreme people see in this book is because they didn't have as useless of a partner or had other help. My friends husband, 10 years later and she is still married to him, luckily she convinced him to move closer to her support system so this last year when she was going through cancer I was able to get their kiddo to school each morning, and our other friend took care of after school and dinner. 10mo
BarbaraBB I am so sorry to hear that. He left her to take care of everything even when she was going through cancer? That is the worst. She must have felt so glad for having people like you around. 10mo

"And she always came back to the same thing: she'd rather go on being a married woman, no matter how hollow the marriage was.
She was forty -five. The prime of life for a man, but on the downhill slope for a woman."

Yikes! As a happily divorced woman edging 45 this is harsh ? Picture with Serene because what would Dolly think with me and my cats! ?

This was a sneaky little bugger. Presents as a straightforward mystery but is really a heartbreaking portrait of a family suffering from addiction, poverty, abuse, and neglect. I could have easily read about them for another 200 pages. #womensprizeforfiction

charl08 Looking forward to picking this one up! 12mo
