#windowshopping (no. 4) 1999 Bergdorf Goodman window. These posts are dedicated to all the retail Littens working today. My heart goes out to you all. I ran a fine jewelry department for a number of years and I feared this day more than any other. I would rise at 4 a.m so I could open all the jewelry safes by five and have everything in its place by six. I would get back home by midnight, feeling defeated and browbeaten. Stay strong!💪🏻💪🏽💪🏿

LeahBergen That sounds brutal! 😮 8y
Suzze That sounds crazycakes. At B&N we had to be there at 6, but we never got a crush until afternoon. I think that why they started the signed copies , to get people into the store earlier. I do not miss the holiday season one single bit. 8y
Crinoline_Laphroaig I spent my time in retail years ago. Always so grateful to be at home on holidays 8y
quirkyreader Today people kept asking if there were any deals. I said no, but Sale Saturday is next week. When I rolled out the shoe trolleys today the customers swooped in and had major fun. 8y
Hobbinol @missnavigation and @quirkyreader And you both lived to talk about it! 🙂Thanks for your comments! 8y

#windowshopping (no. 3 of 4 photos) My very first job was as a window dresser for a large southern retail department store chain. This was way back when stores used to spend a lot of money on their huge street front windows, and before the stores disappeared into the suburban, fluorescent malls-- those eerie places without shadows. This photo is from a store in Salt Lake City, 1977.

I'm playing the violin for all of today's Littens in the retail industry! #windowshopping (2 of 4 photos: Bonwit Teller, 1945)

DivineDiana This is outstanding! For many years, I did work in the retail business. In fact, I worked at Bonwit Teller! 8y
Hobbinol @DivineDiana As wonderful as Bonwit is, aren't you glad your retail days are behind you? My partner says that if everyone worked at least a year in retail that the world would be a much kinder place 😊! 8y
DivineDiana I agree with your partner, but alas, the atmosphere was invigorating for me. I lived in Manhattan at the time. In fact, I recently took a position at a new Anthropologie concept store. Just love the energy and creativity. However, my working hours are minimal by design. No weekends or evenings and I did not work Black (they refer to it as Blessed) Friday! 😉 8y
Hobbinol @DivineDiana I think everything about NYC is invigorating. My retail experience was in creepy suburban malls. NYC is magical this time of year especially. I wish I were there! 8y
DivineDiana That it is! 8y

Since I despise the crass commercialism and greed of the US "Black Friday," I'm going #windowshopping through my own library. (1 of 4 photos.) All my sympathies are with the men and women on today's retail front line. Stay strong!

LeahBergen I like Mr. Suave (bottom right) 😉 8y
CherylDeFranceschi Thanks! Trying to just keep muttering Fortitude over and over to myself! 8y
Hobbinol @LeahBergen 😂He just seems like a bottom right kinda guy to me. 8y
Suet624 I've never gone shopping on Black Friday. Never will. 8y
Hobbinol @Suet624 Very smart! 🤓 8y

I can't walk past a book store without stopping to have a look. A little glimpse if I don't have the time, but I would definitely stop

#readingoutdoors "This story takes place somewhere in someone's head, in mine and in your's and in the heads of people like you. In a sort of beyond." Since I'm more urban than outdoorsy, I snapped this photo of a man reading a book's spine as I passed Lefkowitz The Tailor's shop when I was downtown this morning and that's the best I can do! #somethingforseptember #windowshopping
