#2024reads #nonfiction

I read this a few months back, at times this was a touch dry but the examples and illustrations included made this an easier, fun read.

Keith Houston throws in many facts and trivia of 11 typography symbols, at times this is a touch overwhelming but at the same time fascinating. One of these is how the ampersand used to be the 27th letter of the English alphabet. I‘m still grappling with this one.

DogMomIrene Did it have the same meaning? That‘s wild that a word like “and” in symbolic form was considered a letter. 3w
AnishaInkspill @DogMomIrene yes same meaning, it is amazing to think that this was once a letter 3w
DogMomIrene @AnishaInkspill Wild!🐆 But cool!😎 3w

I just got an Amazon delivery that said "liquids" on the package, which made me wonder whether Amazon can read minds (I wanted to order some alcohol for Christmas presents, but haven't yet).

Dear @CaroPi Thank you for the #HHS #HauntedHollowSwap package! The book sounds intriguing and I'm honestly amazed that it has rounded corners. The chocolate is perfect, especially since I've just made tea and was looking for biscuits. ?

julesG @wanderinglynn Thank you for organising the swap. 😘😘 4w
wanderinglynn Awesome! 🧡🎃🖤👻 4w
CaroPi Sorry that I didn't send the proper package but glad that it arrived for Halloween. You didn't get a second book? I sent two of them 4w

CaroPi Also since you read so much I wanted to play safe 😉that is why I decided the encyclopaedia 4w
julesG @CaroPi No worries, it had that paper thingy inside. Just for a second I was uncertain whether I had ordered the alcohol already and plain forgot about it. The second one might appear in the next days. Or it came with a different delivery provider and is in my postbox - Amazon is weird like that. Will venture downstairs and investigate. The encyclopedia is a wonderful idea. I didn't even know this particular book existed, which is the beauty of 4w
julesG Swaps. You get books you didn't have on your radar, but would have got for yourself. 4w
CaroPi @julesG hello! according to Amazon you got the second book in Saturday. Can you let me know if is there? Worry about it 3w

This is an interesting work of psychology. It‘s a collection of essays inspired by Jungian theories of the collective unconscious and dream symbolism. Of course, Jung‘s essay is the stand-out of the bunch. I listened to this but got the paperback to reference images and interpretations of art. Very interesting book!

This was an interesting book about symbols we use in writing, their history from handwritten manuscripts to modern printing, and further changes with online text. I especially enjoyed the chapters on the pilcrow, octothorpe, and manicule, all of which I also think qualify as weird words. I was not as interested in the discussion of irony and sarcasm and attempts to identify them in print.

Not a fan. I'm about 20% in and have lost interest. The villain is a tiresome mustache twirler. This seems like a pale copy of The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons which I loved. On to something else! It's an obnoxiously cold day in Minnesota. Perfect for coffee and books!

TheBookHippie I agree 🥶 in the Mitten on the lake too 🥶 also #allhailthebail 10mo
Prairiegirl_reading I did not like this either. I‘m not giving Dan Brown any more of my money until he personally comes to my house and gives me my money back for this one! 🤭🤭 10mo
Sparklemn @prairegirl_reading Send him over to my house if he stops by 😁 10mo
