@KarenUK really SOLD this book in her enthusiastic review which had me stacking SO FAST but truthfully this book really isn‘t in my wheelhouse. It‘s such a cozy -,full of British humor and English references that were totally lost on me. I can see it‘s appeal but #RightBookWrongReader 🤷🏼‍♀️ Thank you @squirrelbrain for gifting me this book 🩷 xx

squirrelbrain Sorry it was not what you hoped for. You‘ll have to move to a little English village, maybe! 🤣 1y
Cinfhen Yes….definitely @squirrelbrain I kept thinking that 😂😂😂 1y
KarenUK It is definitely VERY British! 😉 1y
TrishB I can imagine this is how his books are 😁 1y

This book has been on my #TBR since 2022 when it was recommended to me for #AuldLangSpine by @MallenNC
I thought the setting, 1950‘s San Francisco was fantastic, and I enjoyed the atmospheric quality of Chinatown with its food and culture beautifully portrayed, but the story of forbidden love was a bit too YA for me. This IS a YA novel, so it‘s really #MeNotYou when it comes to the the author. It‘s just #RightBookWrongReader

TrishB Agree- very YA, but I enjoyed overall. 1y
Cinfhen This was my #BookSpin for August @TheAromaofBooks and also works for #cars and #5+words for #ISpyBingo 1y
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! 1y

Kitta I usually don‘t like YA, but I really enjoyed this one! 1y
MallenNC I‘m glad you read it! It‘s definitely a YA novel. The setting and characters were what really worked for me. 1y
Cinfhen I think for YA ,especially historical fiction this book was really well done @TrishB @Kitta but it was definitely a YA book 😝 1y
Cinfhen @MallenNC agreed! Setting was excellent 1y

#RightBookWrongReader There was nothing wrong with this book except there was just SO MUCH SCIENCE and I just didn‘t love it like others did. Audio narration was fabulous 🎧❤️ Enjoyed the subtle humor

julesG The science is a bit much, I agree. Lots of centrifuges, too. 😁😁😁 3y
Cinfhen Yes!!! Too much centrifuges not enough musical interludes! I did enjoy The Beatles ♥️ @julesG it‘s also a little anticlimactic because YOU KNOW he‘s going to save the world #Duh 🙄 3y
julesG 🤣🤣🤣 I was wondering what would happen to Grace after saving the world. Would he starve on his ship? Or fly it into a sun? Would he commit suicide? Also, I loved Rocky's sense of humour. 😁 3y

Cinfhen I loved the friendship between Rocky & Royland and I KNEW Royland was going to somehow save Rocky and his universe too @julesG it just plays better on the big screen ❤️ 3y
Megabooks It does have a very cinematic quality to it. It is a lot of (imperfect) science, but I found it to be enjoyable. Especially the Rocky parts!! 3y
Cinfhen Yes: Rocky stole the show...and his partner Adrian made me chuckle 🤭 @Megabooks 3y

More and more authors are starting to ask this question; “who gets to be an American?” and here, Charles Yu cleverly explores this concept. Told in the form of a TV treatment, wannabe star, Willis Wu, who‘s relegated to recurring role of generic Asian Man dreams of breaking out, becoming Kung Fu Guy. When his goal is achieved will he find redemption?
#ToB21

Cinfhen I appreciated what Yu crafted, parts of this story were really humorous and other pages very insightful but I didn‘t really enjoy the novel as a casual read 4y
BarbaraBB I‘m sorry to hear that! On to the next 😉 4y
Cinfhen It‘s making it easier to vote in our #ToB21 @BarbaraBB / next up 4y

Just made it to Part II 💕This is definitely a case of #RightBookWrongReader ☹️Im just not enjoying this book the way I was hoping I would. It‘s very ENGLISH in its language, humor & content. I feel like the “outsider”, missing the joke. #NetGalley #ARC

TrishB ☹️ sorry you‘re not enjoying it! 4y
Cinfhen I‘m bailing 🙈 @TrishB I‘m obviously in the minority and it‘s totally me, the wrong reader 4y
TrishB He is a very marmite author, even for fans! 4y

#SoaringScores #TimeBombTown #NetGalley #ARC Book releases October 15, 2019. A timely look at race relations. Told in the past (Los Angeles 1991/1992 ) and the present day. Based loosely around the shooting of Latasha Harlan‘s, an African American shot in the head by a Korean store owner who thought her life was in danger and the ensuing LA Race Riots. This book had wonderful potential but it was too YA in it‘s writing & storytelling for me.

CrowCAH Perfect timing ⏰ 5y
thereflectiveflaneur I thought it was above YA. I would not recommend it to my younger students. 5y
Cinfhen What grades do you teach @thereflectiveflaneur ?? Certainly HS students would be comfortable with the material / maybe not Middle Grade. I found the dialogue a little simplified 🤷🏼‍♀️#RightBookWrongReader 5y
thereflectiveflaneur @Cinfhen Year 11 + 12 Lit students. I read along with the audiobook and the voice actors did a wonderful job. (edited) 5y
Cinfhen I‘m glad to hear the audio worked well @thereflectiveflaneur 5y

Thank you @WilliamMorrowBooks for providing me with an ARC of this new book. Great premise, exciting concept but ultimately #RightBookWrongReader 😕Even though this is billed as adult fantasy all the YA troupes I don‘t like were very prevalent. Angst, secret longings, hidden agendas, dark vs light and almost nothing about the bookbinding. This was a slow read and one that was too heavy for my beach vacation.

monalyisha Good to know, as I have a copy of this & am solidifying my beach reading list for my upcoming vacation, too! 6y
LeahBergen Oh oh! Then it won‘t be my cup of tea either. 😬 6y
Cathythoughts No YA for me either 😑 6y

Kalalalatja Hmmm... I still don‘t know what to think about it 😅 6y
Cinfhen You might like it @Kalalalatja and you too @Simona but for me this was too outside my usual reading taste 6y
GripLitGrl Keep seeing a lot of mixed reviews on this one thinking this one is bettr as a library read for me 😉 6y
Bklover Well, hell! I was really excited about this one. I can‘t remember why, but I think I was. Maybe I was just a bit intrigued. 😳😜 6y
Simona I‘m okay with skipping this one 😘 6y
Caroline2 Totally agree!! Very YA and way too much cliched romance and not nearly enough of the binding magic for me. I was soooo excited to read it and I felt like the blurb was massively misleading. 6y
Cinfhen I always feel bad when I have to give a less than glowing review @Caroline2 BUT honesty matters 6y
