This book examines how Napoleon expanded his authority, through a combination of stretching the limits of the law and constitution, less than legal means, and a blend of intimidation and effective bribery. The book also examines various people who helped facilitate Napoleon's rise to power. Overall, definitely recommend.

With the PNW autumn chill this morning, it felt appropriate to curl up with a coffee and a book before starting the workday. And what better way to do it than with words of revolution? #revolutionaryletters #dianediprima

Popovic was part of the movement (Otpor) that ousted Milosevic from power in Serbia, and this book is a handbook of sorts—taking principles from Otpor and discussing how those principles could be applied in a variety of contexts, using nonviolent activism and resistance to effect change. The wealth of examples he offers are inspiring and often hilarious. I can‘t help but wonder if the Portland Frog was inspired by this book… ⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) I read this with an online book group over the summer, and I‘m so glad I did. The final session was a discussion with the author—rich with relevant and practical ideas for our current context in the USA. 3w
JamieArc I read this years ago when it first came out and I think about it all the time. I think it‘s been the book I recommend most these days. I, too, thought of the connection between Portland and this book. I‘ve been hoping someone would get into some creative protest! 3w
BarbaraJean @JamieArc Right?! I just keep talking about it. I even talked about it with my (conservative but horrified by Trump) dad as we saw protests over the weekend here in the LA area. I was so glad to see the creative protests in Portland and am hoping that kind of action gets more prominent. 2w

I love it when dates line up like this ?
In a dystopian version of the US, Ben is desperate for money for his sick daughter. He is so desperate that he volunteers for the running man game, a game no one has ever won ?‍⬛

"Congress and the Senate were empty pretences, farces. Public questions were gravely debated and passed upon according to the old forms, while in reality all that was done to give the stamp of constitutional procedure to the mandate of the Oligarchy."

This woman can write. She doesn't shy from the ugliness of war, famine, struggles. There were times I drowned in the way she described life. Just beautiful and pure. I will definitely read her novels. There beginning of the Revolution was clearly started by #MenofLetters @OutsmartYourShelf #FoodandLit @texreader @Catsandbooks

“The girls in the Church, a lot of us, dealt with these physical symptoms that couldn't be explained. Girls who experienced paralysis, like me. Girls who stopped talking for months, or years. Like our bodies objected, but we were all still true believers. Like something in us refused, even as we were still loyal.”

When the author travels around #Nicaragua, the Cold War is still being fought on the ground there. The Soviets funded the Sandinistas and the US funded the Contras. He recounted talking to numerous folks, most supporting the Sandinistas, and told some of the country‘s history. Occasionally he‘d weigh in on his opinions, which I didn‘t feel were well-supported by his narrative. In other words, I would have liked more academic input to support ⬇️

Texreader his theses. I had a hard time connecting his logic. Maybe it was me and I was bored with the meandering nature of the book. But I always appreciate reading about travels through foreign lands, and the insight of the people. I probably would have liked it better as a travel journal. #foodandlit @Catsandbooks 1mo
