TheIntrovertedDodoBird
Let's Talk About Love | Claire Kann
post image
Bailedbailed

Simply awful. This is the worst ace rep I've ever had the displeasure of reading, and I'm supposed to be the target audience. The author doesn't seem to understand asexuality at all; aces experience little to no s-xual attraction, but Kann seems obsessed with the MC not experiencing physical s-xual responses until suddenly she does and that supposedly invalidates her orientation. It's about ATTRACTION! Do better, Kann! Okay, rant officially over.

TheIntrovertedDodoBird @willaful @LiteraryinLawrence It's especially frustrating since there isn't much ace rep out there, so when there's a particularly bad representation, it strikes a deeper chord. If bad rep could get lost amongst the good rep, it wouldn't be so disappointing. But there are some gems out there, luckily 🖤🩶🤍💜. 7mo
LiteraryinPA @TheIntrovertedDodoBird What are some of your favorites? I‘ve been trying to figure out whether I identify as ace over the last year or so, and I‘d love to know what rings true to you. 7mo
TheIntrovertedDodoBird @LiteraryinLawrence My go-to suggestion is always How To Be a Normal Person by TJ Klune (my ace awakening, as I like to think of it). Klune is ace himself, so it's great to read a #ownvoice author. I highly recommend In The Lives of Puppets by Klune, too. Also, Loveless by Alice Oseman (another #ownvoice author who is aro-ace) and Solitaire by Alice Oseman (this one is more ace-coded as Oseman hadn't figured out their identity when they wrote it). 6mo
TheIntrovertedDodoBird His Quiet Agent by Ada Maria Soto is a novella about a platonic couple. There's a fantastic nonfiction book called Ace: What Asexuality Reveals About Desire, Society, and the Meaning of Sex which is a super informative book for those who are questioning. Also, Being Ace: An Anthology of Queer, Trans, Femme, and Disabled Stories of Asexual Love and Connection. 6mo
TheIntrovertedDodoBird Fiction or nonfiction, these are all very authentic, very realistic portrayals of asexuality that rang true and resonated with me when I was figuring out my identity. Klune will always be very special to me because of this. Good luck. I hope these help you 🖤🩶🤍💜. 6mo
willaful LOVE His Quiet Agent.

K.J Charles has an asexual romance novella, The Rat-Catcher's Daughter, and Alex Beecroft has an #OwnVoices romance, Blue-Steel Chain.

The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy is one I personally didn't enjoy but might be good rep, I dunno. Socially Orcward by Lisa Henry is cute and fluffy but feels condescending towards the ace characters. It's very popular though, so that might just be me.
6mo
LiteraryinPA Thank you! I read both the Osemans but I‘ll definitely try the Klune. I looooove Cerulean Sea. Thanks again! 6mo
TheIntrovertedDodoBird @willaful His Quiet Agent is SO good. Best representation of a platonic couple I've ever read/seen. I haven't heard of some of your #ownvoices recommendations. I'll add them to my toppling TBR pile 🖤🩶🤍💜. Thank you! 6mo
TheIntrovertedDodoBird @LiteraryinLawrence Alice Oseman is incredible. I'm a huge Heartstopper fan. The ace rep in the Netflix series was amazing (first I've ever seen), and I'm excited for Tori's storyline in the next season! The House in the Cerulean Sea is sooooooo good! The sequel is coming out in September! Have you read Under the Whispering Door? And the Greencreek Series by him is fantastic, too (there's an ace character in that one, too - also an aro character). 6mo

This is a beautiful memoir. It is definitely worth a read. It's only 12 chapters, so it's not a long one.

Our latest family read was emotional for all of us. Celebration balanced our anger and reminded us to pause when interacting with people who differ from us and how we can all learn from each other. We are inspired, motivated and suggest this book to everyone who will listen! Peyton/Charity's middle-grade #OwnVoice story is for all readers and worthy of rereads. @goddardpeyton

I didn‘t plan on reading this book when I heard about all the controversy around this book. But when I saw the #bbrc yeah baby prompt: fake diversity for adults I knew this was the book I would read. I feel bad even reading it because I know I should be supporting #ownvoices authors instead. With knowing all the controversy I just couldn‘t really get into it!

Sarahreadstoomuch Excellent choice for the prompt! I bailed on this one myself. 4y
Lovesbooks87 @Sarahreadstoomuch I probably would have too but I listened to the audiobook so I could do other things while I listened! 4y
Sarahreadstoomuch @Lovesbooks87 great strategy! 4y

LibrarianRyan Excellent choice. 4y
JamieArc I usually cringe and scroll quickly past so as not to pass judgment on the Litten who reads this, but I‘m glad I read what you wrote! 👏🏼😂 4y
Lovesbooks87 @JamieArc yes! The minute I saw the news come out I was like I will not read this book. I will support #ownvoice authors. But then the prompt came up on my challenge so I was like I guess this is the book to read. I don‘t know if a lot of people know the whole controversy around the book with it being out for a year now. But I just had to put it out there! (edited) 4y

One of the books I requested on #Netgalley, hadn't realized it was so short and that it wasn't a recent publication 😅 Still, I'm glad I read it. The story follows Sugihara who was born and raised in Japan but is constantly discriminated for having Korean roots. He's what the Japanese call Zainichi. We see how he lives and the struggles he goes through when he falls in love with a Japanese girl. Really heavy and dark, TW for violence #ownvoice

erzascarletbookgasm I have this on my shelves, hope to get to it sometime this year! 4y
coffees @erzascarletbookgasm Ohhh nice!! It's not the best esp in the romance department but I found it really educational and just raw 👌👌 4y

March stats: 23 books, 21 by women, 6 by #ownvoice authors. Tagged my favorite, though I liked many of them, 3 other faves in the photo. 😄 Good month for reading!

#weeklyforecast
Perfect time to read Catton's book because part one is titled 27 January 1866.
I also started the next ARC on my TRP. It's a bit controversial because the although the author is trans writing about a trans character the historical/fantasy setting is not her culture. So it's a mixed #ownvoice.

Cinfhen Are you using Luminaries as your #millennialAuthor ??? 5y
writerlibrarian @Cinfhen yes i am. It's kinda serendipity that the dates are in synch. It feels right somehow. 🙂 5y
Cinfhen I love when that happens 🥰 5y
