Good. Interesting characters as they were a German/English family in the midst of World War 1. It showed how the experience of war affected their place in the world and how they fitted into it.

Good. Love the twists and turns that this book brings it left me guessing right till the end. Even though this is book 5 of The Eddie Flynn series, and some of the characters refer back to other cases it doesn't hamper the story as it is easy to read as a stand alone.

Recommended on the BBC Book show Between the Covers. I seriously think that show is bad for my TBR as this is the 3rd book I have bought because of this show! 😂😂

squirrelbrain I bought this for my husband for Christmas, as a result of the show too! I‘m sure they never said it was part of a series though.... 4y
Birdsong28 @squirrelbrain Yes I only found that out when I entered it on GoodReads, I was a bit put off to start with as I was worried that I wouldn't be able to read it because of the characters having history but it doesn't seem to get in the way as it is about the case really. 4y
squirrelbrain That‘s good news then - and maybe, if he likes it, he might read the whole series! 4y

Good. Fans of the T. V show Emmerdale will enjoy seeing familiar names. Don't be fooled by the title as the only Christmas scene was the last chapter was a bit disappointed by this. It was a good story. Just a warning though as domestic violence as a theme does feature heavily and there is a rape scene as well. Thank you #Netgalley for the free copy.

Cuilin I would totally read this. I remember when the show was called Emmerdale Farm. ❤️ 4y

Very good. This is a story of secrets and how they can affect a family down the generations if they are revealed. A real page turner as the author slips in references that even though there are plenty of secrets within this family there is a much bigger secret to come and that it could have devastating effects if revealed.

Birdsong28 Once you find out the big secret, which isn't done till the very end, you are left with decision as to how you see the main couples relationship whether it is a good or bad thing. #OrionPublishingGroup 4y
Birdsong28 Totally having a #bookhangover with this one. As I need to process the ending!!! 📚 📖 4y
eraderneely This is the first book I have ever slammed down on the table. I wasn‘t mad, just shocked! My book club is still talking about it a year later. (edited) 4y

Very good. Interesting characters and concept. A real page turner and a atmospheric book. My only issue with this is that there could have been a chapter near the beginning to explain how they came to be living in this world with the government banning unhealthy food, rather than little snippets here and there. Fans of The Handmaid's Tale and Vox will love this. Can't believe this is a debut novel.

zezeki That cover does remind me a bit of The Handmaid's Tale cover. 5y
KathyWheeler The cover reminded me a bit of Hillary Jordan‘s 5y
