Human Rites: A Novel | Juno Dawson

A decent ending to the series/trilogy, but not how I expected things to end.

The story starts right where Shadow Cabinet ended - not going to spoil the ending of book two here, people who have read it know what happened. From there lots of things are going on that lead to a lot of loose ends to tie up and Dawson used a rather deus ex machina method to achieve this.

Low pick

Maia returns to the island where she wrote her first book, met & lost a great love, & still holds the secrets of her parents. When her host is found dead, it‘s up to her & the other residents to find out what is happening before the next victim falls.

Quite a ride! Loved all the Greek mythology references, the mystery kept me guessing, & feminine rage bleeds through the whole novel. Maia was a lot bit more relatable than I expected!🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

The second outing for barrister, Lee Mitchell, sees her defending someone from her legal Chambers - Junior Clerk, Dean. Dean's boss, Tom Mannion, was found dead in a dark alley after a night out drinking, & Dean was the last person to be seen with him. Even though the evidence, what there is of it, is mostly circumstantial, the police & judiciary seem oddly keen to prosecute the case. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf Lee knew Tom too & knows that there are many others who had reason to dislike Tom but did they dislike him enough to kill?

I enjoyed this one slightly more than the first book. It was frustrating but true to life, to see the rich & [en]titled with their private clubs & 'old boys' networks conspire to focus attention on working class Dean. If there's a criticism, i would say that again the solution to the case literally walks through the door,

OutsmartYourShelf it's not really found by Lee as such. I spent most of the book wondering why no-one had looked for the CCTV on the bus Dean caught back home, because it wasn't even mentioned until almost three-quarters of the way through. It's a solid legal thriller though & I'm kind of warming to Lee. 4🌟

My thanks to #NetGalley & publishers, Penguin UK/Hamish Hamilton, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

This is book 2 in the series. I havent read book 1 ye but I will because I really enjoyed it. I love a cosy mystery and even better when its set in my home county of Norfolk. The plot was simple but clever and the ending was perfect for the story, Especially the last scene with her husband. Daphne is a relatable and fun lead. I instantly warmed to her. The setting is so recogisable for the area its based. #Netgalley 4*

I didn't find myself gripped by the story until right at the very end. Its a bit of a slow burn and at times seems more focused on the personal lives of the characters than the main mystery. That being said the ending was really cleverly done with a brilliant twist. It was worth finishing. There's a lot going on beside the main murder and no character stood out to me as really likeable. I think because we jump from person to person. #Netgalley 4*

There is nothing better to read in July than a bantery rom-com set in a summer paradise and this book hits that mark. I enjoyed everything about this book. Lily & Ben have a wonderful sweet relationship full of support and growth. They had a wonderful apartment building (pool & bar anyone?) (cont.)

CoffeeK8 Their friend circle was amazing! It made me want to run away for the summer with my friends to read by the pool and drink Rosé.

Thanks to #NetGalley and #HarlequinAudio for an audio ARC of this book. The narrator was awesome and brought depth to the narration.

This book was just so much fun! Our heroine, Evie attempts to save her gym-bro neighbor from an zombie attack believing he can't defend himself, only to find out that he is a lethal vampire who is more than able to defend himself. He also has the nerve to get angry at Evie for attempting to save him (admittedly, throwing a burrito at a charging zombie is not super effective, but it was all she had at the moment). (Cont.)

CoffeeK8 The duo then sets out to try to figure out why the zombies were released from their prison and how to save their neighbors from attack. Evie and Max's banter and chemistry were excellent and the book was overall just a really enjoyable read.

Thanks to #Netgalley and #BerkleyPublishingGroup for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

CoffeeK8 @BethM I was honestly a little skeptical but if you like the Mead Mishaps series then it would be right up your alley. Just buckle up and suspend your disbelief 5d

Natalie Grove has spent her entire adulthood trying to figure out who killed her sister, while also writing mystery novels. Her latest novel is a fictionalized account of the story of her sister's murder, and with it's publication, Natalie becomes embroiled in a number of fantastical plots perpetrated by different people in her community who are trying to keep their own secrets from coming out. (Cont.)

CoffeeK8 The characters were interesting and the resolution of this mystery was very satisfying, but at moments it became hard to follow all the side plots and schemes of those around Natalie who weren't involved in the actual murder plot.

Thank you to #Netgalley and #StormPublishing for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
