An author arrives for his appointment with an independent literary agent based in the Acheron Estate. The agency is run by one man & he seems rather eccentric, while the office itself is rather rundown & grubby. Still one shouldn't judge on first impressions......should one?

This was a very odd novella to start with. I wasn't sure what was happening in the first couple of chapters or where it was going to go, but it turned out to be (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf worth sticking with & one piece of the puzzle turns everything on its head. Told from several points of view, this was a strange, yet compulsive read. 3.25⭐

My thanks to #NetGalley, & the author for the opportunity to read an ARC.

OOh what a twisted web this was to read. I'm definitely becoming a fan of the author. I think her first might be my favourite so far but this was still good. Its quite a simple plot at heart but filled with clever twists and secrets to keep you hooked. The ending was so good and I loved how it all came together. I figured out some bits but not all and was impressed by the end. #Netgalley 4*

I am pretty sure the last time I read a Grisham novel was when the movie with Susan Sarandon came out (The Client?). #netgalley gave me the incentive I needed to try another during last week‘s sick day. It felt uneven to me. The first half was pretty gripping and I wanted Simon to run screaming from the widow. Then things took a pivot with the court case and I was way less interested. It was like two different books. 5/10

Medusa has had many roles in many stories. Daughter, sister, mortal, priestess, victim, monster. Here‘s a story that incorporates many aspects of her past to make something new.

A fascinating retelling of Medusa. This Medusa is much younger than other retellings, & that influences a lot. Medusa‘s characterization is deep, but everyone else‘s is shallow. The pacing kept me tense the whole time, & the ending left me feeling a bit sad.🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

Octogenarian & crossword setter, Edie O'Sullivan, wins a three-day Christmas break at a luxury hotel on a remote, uninhabited Scottish island which has a tragic past. Taking along partner nonagenarian Riga, son DI Sean Brand-O'Sullivan (whose partner & children will be joining them on Christmas Day) & dog Nicholas, they meet an unusual group of fellow celebrants. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf Hotel manager, Mara, is nervous as this is the big opening for the hotel, the one her parents have sunk all their savings into. Understaffed & with a huge storm forecast, Christmas has to be a success. At first everything seems to be going well but at the Gala Dinner the first evening, the Christmas crackers are rather strange. They contain a gift & a party hat but also weird riddles rather than the traditional jokes. 4d
OutsmartYourShelf When over the next hours, the guests start being murdered one by one in ways pertaining to the riddles, Mara & Edie realise that there is a killer on the island.

This is apparently the second book to feature amateur detective Edie. I haven't read the first one but I don't think it made any difference as it works as a standalone. It started off well with the creepy crackers but suffered a common issue with mystery thrillers & became a little slow
4d
OutsmartYourShelf in the middle. I did like the fact that there are several optional word games for the reader to play as they read the book but they don't have any bearing on the mystery itself so they can be easily skipped. I did find that with so many characters it became a little muddled towards the end, but it just managed to keep my interest. 3.75🌟

My thanks to #NetGalley & publishers, Simon & Schuster UK, for the opportunity to read an ARC

The adventures continue as the whole gang travel to India to meet Connie‘s family & find an artifact of immense destructive power before the Order.

Such a fun series! Love the relationships between all the characters (although 1 particular aspect felt rushed), loved the spotlight on Connie‘s family & the plight of India under British rule. & really enjoying the depth given to 1 of the villains, making for a really interesting conflict. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

julesG I hope that villain gets more spotlight and/or his own novella/spin-off. 5d
julesG I also enjoyed seeing more of Neil and Connie, but their relationship felt a bit rushed. 5d

BookmarkTavern @julesG Oh yes! Something like a short prequel showing how he got to where he is at the beginning of the first book. 5d
BookmarkTavern @julesG Yes! And how the ending seemed to be saying, oh I‘ve actually loved you the whole time?! Your POVs certainly didn‘t set that up particularly well! 😂 5d
julesG Right?! In both cases. 5d
julesG I have to say I liked bumbling Neil more in this one. In the second book he had 'John Hannah in The Mummy' vibes, but the character grew out of this in Arrow of Fortune. 5d
BookmarkTavern @julesG Yes. He was still clumsy, but he had such depth in this one. His worry about how Ellie and everyone might see him differently, his acceptance of Ellie and Adam‘s relationship was all great. 5d

Tall & considered plain at the side of her sister & friends, the Bennetts, 27-year-old Charlotte is used to being overlooked, so when Mr Collins proposes to her she accepts. She chooses to follow her head & not her heart when marrying Mr Collins, hoping to be content with her lot & yet finds that maybe romantic love may not be out of her reach after all.

OutsmartYourShelf I've read several P&P reimaginings, but never anything from the point of view of Charlotte Lucas. I wasn't sure what to expect as most of Charlotte's married life takes off the page, but I think the author was pretty faithful to the characters for the most part. By the end of it, I had almost come to like Lady Catherine de Burgh! It also manages to humanise Mr Collins a little more.

6d
OutsmartYourShelf Some may disagree with Charlotte's actions, but I think the fact that the patriarchal nature of Regency society, forcing middle & upper-class women to marry to not become a burden to their families, but unable to earn their own money, puts Charlotte into a situation she would not perhaps have chosen had other alternatives been available.

Overall, it's a well-written story which makes a side character from the original come to life on the page.
6d
OutsmartYourShelf I really enjoyed it & I'm not a big reader of romance. 4🌟

Six down on their luck mystery adjacent people are invited to the small village of Midwinter to compete in a fictional murder mystery game organised by the Midwinter Trust. Then two actual murders happen.

I read an excerpt late last year which made this sound like a locked room murder mystery homage to the Golden Age Mysteries where the reader is encouraged to guess the clues together with the amateur sleuths.

julesG The novel was a slog through a lot of repetitive backstory with characters that aren't developed much past their cliché descriptions "failed author," "literary agent involved in scandal," "token American barkeep". The clues weren't very difficult to work out and there is a handy solutions guide at the back.

The final nail in the coffin was the deus ex machina twist to make the ending seem plausible. ??

julesG #ChrismasCrimeChallenge Snowflake it's set at Christmas time and that part of Yorkshire is under a nice blanket of snow 6d

RaeLovesToRead Darn it. This is on my pile :/ 5d
julesG @RaeLovesToRead Sorry. Maybe you like it more than I did. You know I'm not a fan of epic/drawn out backstory/world-building, maybe that's why I didn't enjoy the novel more. 5d
RaeLovesToRead Haha. I'm not getting epic from the cover... but I'll be giving it a go! 5d
