Two cold winter books down that have been sitting on my #TBR for a while. This thriller was okay. Not great.

I don‘t know what I want to read next.

Pickpick

'An Arcane Inheritance' has a melancholic feel throughout the novel. Ellory seems like she is always searching for something whether it is the deja vu memories that follow her around Warren University or her sense of self. The magic in the book is interesting without being over complicated. For those who enjoy it, there is a enemies-to-lovers trope. I enjoyed the bittersweet feel of this novel.
4 stars.

A delightfully fantastical collection of short stories from Senaa Ahmed.

These were wild! I should have expected that, as I had read Let‘s Play Dead years ago, but I was so thrilled. From a resurrecting modern Anne Boleyn to the ghost of Joan of Arc possessing a young woman to a choose your own adventure set during the Manhattan Project, you will never be able to predict where these stories go or how they make you feel.🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

#unpopularopinion I really enjoyed Head Cases with its unique characters and special FBI division. I like the concept of PAR. This sequel did not work for me at all. The characters felt lifeless and the plot, which should have had me on the edge of my seat while they investigated and connected two cases, was tedious. Also, going into dangerous situations without back up is a lazy plot device. It angers me every time. 🤬 #bookspin #netgalley

The end of the 18th-century in America saw the medical profession grew exponentially which required the in-house training of medical students. New medical schools were set up but anatomy instructors needed a steady supply of cadavers to meet requirements, & there were never enough via legal means. The demand saw body snatchers or 'resurrectionists' employed to illegally obtain bodies under cover of darkness from nearby cemeteries.

OutsmartYourShelf April 1788 saw a crowd of New Yorkers, angry at the actions of the resurrectionists & doctors, gather outside an anatomy lab & threaten violence.

Well-researched, this book is not just about the aforementioned 'Doctors' Riot' (which feels a misleading name as it was not doctors that were rioting but the poor against the actions of the doctors) but covers wider implications as well.

OutsmartYourShelf It also discusses the juxtaposition of the importance of cadavers for the training of medical students versus a person's dignity in death, whilst ranging from historical body snatching to modern technological advances of training today.

For me, it started off well but when it suddenly veered off into US History 101, I had to check on my ereader that I was still reading this book & hadn't opened by mistake the biography of George Washington that

OutsmartYourShelf I am reading concurrently. The relevance of the information did become clearer later on but I'm not sure so much detail was needed. Also in the later chapters it felt like just as it seemed to be getting into its stride, it ended. Overall an interesting subject but the riot itself was a very small section of it. 3.5 🌟

My thanks to #NetGalley & publishers, Globe Pequot/Prometheus, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

Renata Drake is laying low & so boards a bus to a small town in Southern Humboldt County, California. It's 1985 &, apart from the local paper, Garberville has its news delivered in & it's always several days behind - which may give Renata enough time to plan further moves. Unfortunately it seems that Garberville is not the quiet town she hoped, the area is under surveillance due to its links with the cannabis-growing industry,

OutsmartYourShelf & the FBI are flying in to investigate a series of murders.

Several young girls have been murdered & local police aren't making much progress. Renata, now going by the name Natalie “Natty“ Connors & pretending to be a law student taking a year out to travel, knows all about losing someone close & so, against her better judgment, she decides to stay for now & investigate the murders.

OutsmartYourShelf This was a mixed read for me. I thought the storyline was interesting & Renata/Natty is the kind of main character that steadily grows on you. The fact it was set in the 1980s obviously meant that DNA testing was in its infancy & there was little other evidence in the cases which explained some of the issues in solving it.

A few things didn't make sense though - surely heading to a small town where everyone knows everyone else & their business is
5d
OutsmartYourShelf the worst move as a newcomer stands out? Also everyone is naturally suspicious of everyone else due to the murders but they seem to have no problems spilling everything to Natty. I also thought the killer was easy to work out too. Having said all this, I did enjoy reading it & would read further books in the planned series.

My thanks to #NetGalley & publishers, Severn House, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

Book not in database

The premise of this book sounded very intriguing, unfortunately it didn't exactly click with me. The pacing was too slow for my liking. The story is slowly unfolding with an emphasis on world-building, tension and atmosphere.

I am, and I have often said this, not a fan of slow paced stories. So this might be a case of wrong reader/audience.
