Thanks to #netgalley for the ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review. Such an eerie read it was hard to put down once I started it. Set within a haunted house harbouring dark secrets within its walls, the sense of foreboding I felt with each page turn was captivating. Grieving twins with an imaginary friend their father would prefer they didn't have.A chilling read that will haunt you long after you have reached the final page.⭐⭐⭐⭐

I loved this. Historical fiction set in the 1980s on Fire Island amid the AIDS pandemic with some magical realism thrown in.

This was mis-marketed as a Sapphic fantasy rooted in Finnish mythology. It's why I went for it on Netgalley. This has apparently since been addressed by the author and has been changed.

I was also excited by the Finnish mythology. I think the Sapphic element probably tipped the scale for me because without it I probably wouldn't have gone for it especially since it's a chonky book.

PuddleJumper I am aware that, as it was mis-marketed, I am not the target audience. However, this was incredibly boring to read.

The choice to write in the first person present did not help. The writing did not evoke any feelings, it was very matter of fact and dull.

2d
PuddleJumper The characters were bland. Their personalities were whatever the plot needed. The main villain had no nuance, they were a caricature of evil.

There was no sense of time. I have no idea how long the main characters were separated for. How long one suffered in the underworld. That might have helped with character motivation if I knew she'd been there for months rather than days.

2d
PuddleJumper It didn't need to be that long either. Portions of the book really dragged. I ended up skimming bits because it was becoming a chore to read.

The whole thing felt like a chore in the end. I can see why people enjoyed this, for me it was a miss.

Thanks to #NetGalley for the #ARC

Texreader If it really was Finnish, it also worked for #foodandlit this month. 2d
PuddleJumper @Texreader It was set in Finland in a kind of vague 'oh no Sweden' time period 2d
Andrew65 Oh no 😫 I hope the next book is better! 2d

Separated from his mother and twin brother in childhood, Li Jun and his father are exiled from a land where martial arts are restricted to a land filled with schools who hope to win glory by training the Guardian of the Scroll, the best martial artist in the country. Jun defies his father to compete and finds himself entangled in power struggles beyond his imagining. This is a good if unevenly paced start to a new series. Hits shelves Jan 2025.

LeafingThroughLife September #bookspin catch up! Also #NetGalley 🙂 3d

This book looks at the topic of premature interment (a more genteel way of saying buried alive) & some miraculous escapes in the nick of time. To be honest, I'm really not sure what possessed me to read this book, I can't think of something more likely to induce nightmares! It was shocking just how many possible 'premature interments' there may have been, particularly around the time of war or disease. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf Thankfully the risk of being buried alive has lessened somewhat in more modern times although it has not disappeared completely.

It was also absolutely unfathomable to me how people could have heard shouting or knocking & instead of immediately digging it back up or opening the coffin, going off to find someone in charge. An official in one of the cases waited TWO DAYS after sounds were heard before allowing it to be opened. TWO DAYS!
3d
OutsmartYourShelf The book itself is very readable. Rather than a linear narrative it was split into different topics (i.e. ritual, criminal, accidental, etc) & mainly consisted of a listing of cases. They were very interesting, if macabre, & there was obviously a lot of local history research completed by the author. I did notice that sometimes a death concerning a particular topic would be included in one chapter & then a later chapter would deal the topic in 3d
OutsmartYourShelf more detail - it gave the book a repetitious feel in places even though no cases were actually repeated. If that makes sense. It also ends very suddenly with no concluding chapter which felt a little abrupt. 3⭐

My thanks to #NetGalley & publishers, Pen & Sword, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

A suspenseful True Crime books about the search for justice in a famous Alaskan murder case. I felt so much sympathy for the people affected by this tragedy, and was appalled by the way the police originally handled the case. ⤵️

CoffeeK8 Overall, a well written book, but I found the way the timeline jumped around occasionally hard to follow and had to go back to re-read to confirm which year was being discussed. That being said, I would highly recommend this book to any true crime fan.

Thanks to #Netgalley and Sourcebook for this ARC in exchance for an honest review.

A fascinating look at Munchausen by Proxy through the stories of 3 different women and the trauma they put their families through. This book was heartbreaking at times, and I‘m amazed at the courage of the children who made it out the other side. Thanks to #Netgalley for the arc.

Christmas with the Queen | Hazel Gaynor, Heather Webb

Aww what a lovely festive read. The queens speech was such a legacy and a tradition in many UK households including mine. We all sat with our christmas pudding to hear her words. This was such a heartfelt and wonderful take on those messages and those working behind the scenes. I loved the little interludes from the queen herself. The story though is mostly told by Jack and Olive. The plot is simple and sweet. #Netgalley 4*

Seabreeze_Reader So glad to see a positive review. 🎄 I have the audio version so this one is at the top of my holiday reading list. ❄️ 5d
kezzlou85 @Seabreeze_Reader I really enjoyed it. It's an easy read and kind of poignant now both the queen and Prince Phillip have died. 5d
