Octogenarian & crossword setter, Edie O'Sullivan, wins a three-day Christmas break at a luxury hotel on a remote, uninhabited Scottish island which has a tragic past. Taking along partner nonagenarian Riga, son DI Sean Brand-O'Sullivan (whose partner & children will be joining them on Christmas Day) & dog Nicholas, they meet an unusual group of fellow celebrants. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf Hotel manager, Mara, is nervous as this is the big opening for the hotel, the one her parents have sunk all their savings into. Understaffed & with a huge storm forecast, Christmas has to be a success. At first everything seems to be going well but at the Gala Dinner the first evening, the Christmas crackers are rather strange. They contain a gift & a party hat but also weird riddles rather than the traditional jokes. 7h
OutsmartYourShelf When over the next hours, the guests start being murdered one by one in ways pertaining to the riddles, Mara & Edie realise that there is a killer on the island.

This is apparently the second book to feature amateur detective Edie. I haven't read the first one but I don't think it made any difference as it works as a standalone. It started off well with the creepy crackers but suffered a common issue with mystery thrillers & became a little slow
7h
OutsmartYourShelf in the middle. I did like the fact that there are several optional word games for the reader to play as they read the book but they don't have any bearing on the mystery itself so they can be easily skipped. I did find that with so many characters it became a little muddled towards the end, but it just managed to keep my interest. 3.75🌟

My thanks to #NetGalley & publishers, Simon & Schuster UK, for the opportunity to read an ARC

The adventures continue as the whole gang travel to India to meet Connie‘s family & find an artifact of immense destructive power before the Order.

Such a fun series! Love the relationships between all the characters (although 1 particular aspect felt rushed), loved the spotlight on Connie‘s family & the plight of India under British rule. & really enjoying the depth given to 1 of the villains, making for a really interesting conflict. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

julesG I hope that villain gets more spotlight and/or his own novella/spin-off. 1d
julesG I also enjoyed seeing more of Neil and Connie, but their relationship felt a bit rushed. 1d

BookmarkTavern @julesG Oh yes! Something like a short prequel showing how he got to where he is at the beginning of the first book. 1d
BookmarkTavern @julesG Yes! And how the ending seemed to be saying, oh I‘ve actually loved you the whole time?! Your POVs certainly didn‘t set that up particularly well! 😂 1d
julesG Right?! In both cases. 1d
julesG I have to say I liked bumbling Neil more in this one. In the second book he had 'John Hannah in The Mummy' vibes, but the character grew out of this in Arrow of Fortune. 1d
BookmarkTavern @julesG Yes. He was still clumsy, but he had such depth in this one. His worry about how Ellie and everyone might see him differently, his acceptance of Ellie and Adam‘s relationship was all great. 1d

Tall & considered plain at the side of her sister & friends, the Bennetts, 27-year-old Charlotte is used to being overlooked, so when Mr Collins proposes to her she accepts. She chooses to follow her head & not her heart when marrying Mr Collins, hoping to be content with her lot & yet finds that maybe romantic love may not be out of her reach after all.

OutsmartYourShelf I've read several P&P reimaginings, but never anything from the point of view of Charlotte Lucas. I wasn't sure what to expect as most of Charlotte's married life takes off the page, but I think the author was pretty faithful to the characters for the most part. By the end of it, I had almost come to like Lady Catherine de Burgh! It also manages to humanise Mr Collins a little more.

3d
OutsmartYourShelf Some may disagree with Charlotte's actions, but I think the fact that the patriarchal nature of Regency society, forcing middle & upper-class women to marry to not become a burden to their families, but unable to earn their own money, puts Charlotte into a situation she would not perhaps have chosen had other alternatives been available.

Overall, it's a well-written story which makes a side character from the original come to life on the page.

OutsmartYourShelf I really enjoyed it & I'm not a big reader of romance. 4🌟

Six down on their luck mystery adjacent people are invited to the small village of Midwinter to compete in a fictional murder mystery game organised by the Midwinter Trust. Then two actual murders happen.

I read an excerpt late last year which made this sound like a locked room murder mystery homage to the Golden Age Mysteries where the reader is encouraged to guess the clues together with the amateur sleuths.

julesG The novel was a slog through a lot of repetitive backstory with characters that aren't developed much past their cliché descriptions "failed author," "literary agent involved in scandal," "token American barkeep". The clues weren't very difficult to work out and there is a handy solutions guide at the back.

The final nail in the coffin was the deus ex machina twist to make the ending seem plausible. ??

Ruthiella Sorry this wasn‘t a winner. But it‘s at least of the TBR now. 3d
julesG @Ruthiella Yepp! One less book on the list. 😁 2d
RaeLovesToRead Darn it. This is on my pile :/ 2d
julesG @RaeLovesToRead Sorry. Maybe you like it more than I did. You know I'm not a fan of epic/drawn out backstory/world-building, maybe that's why I didn't enjoy the novel more. 2d
RaeLovesToRead Haha. I'm not getting epic from the cover... but I'll be giving it a go! 2d

THis was such a heart warming and fun festive read. If you love a festive romance without lots of drama and misunderstandings then this is for you. The plot is fun and introduces us to lots of lovely characters., The ending was perfect and I loved how it all came together. The characters are so likeable. Pops definitely stole the show for me. A wonderful festive read with a hint of spice. #Netgalley 4*

A book about the first orphanage in Europe - the 'Ospedale degli Innocenti' or Hospital of the Innocents - which was opened in 1445 in Florence, Italy. Designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, it also featured artwork from other artists of the Renaissance such as the painter Domenico Ghirlandaio & sculptor Luca della Robbia. Many thousands of children were abandoned here over the years & not just orphans (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf but those who parents could not afford to care for them, children born out of affairs or sexual assault.

For all good intentions though, the outcome of life for these children was a mixed bag. The rate of survival was not much better than the average & yet it became a birthplace of modern pediatrics, boys were given an education whilst girls learned trades such as weaving, but both were vulnerable to the predations of their employers when they

OutsmartYourShelf were sent out to work, & the hospital was usually in debt & yet those in charge prioritised the purchasing of artwork.

This was an interesting & informative read which has been very well researched. It's a part of Italian history that I knew very little about before reading it & it inspired me to look it up online where the 'Museo degli Innocenti' details the history, art, & architecture of the orphanage. Looking at some of the photographs

OutsmartYourShelf it seems to have been quite a bleak place but probably better than the alternative. I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in a different aspect of Renaissance history. 4.5🌟

Nix has left her past in the past and moved on with her life in the military, or so she thought. Then Kessandra, her former lover and the people's favourite 'royal', hires Nix as her bodyguard on a covert operation. On the way to the mission, on board a Titanic-like submersible, Kess briefs Nix about what is really at stake; and not a minute too soon,... ⬇️

julesG as the sickness that's turning people into violent killers is spreading among the passengers and crew.

I liked the world-building, the intricately described submersible, but also the background information on the political situation and what kinds of conflicts are brewing within the country and outside of it.

This was a dark yet at times amusing crime thriller. Its book 3 in the series. I haven't read the others but I could follow along enough without. I will go back and check them out though. The plot is clever and twisty. There's lots going on around the main plot as well but it keeps the story interesting and allows depth to the characters. The ending was well done too and tied it off brilliantly. I have to say I loved Amanda the most. #Netgalley 4*

Bette I really enjoyed this series. 👍😊 4d
kezzlou85 @Bette im going to look out for the other ones as this was good 4d
Bette We saw the Tv series on Amazon…for some reason it‘s called Troppo but it‘s based on Fox‘s Crimson Lake books. When I saw the geese I started to yell. 🪿🪿🪿🪿🪿👏🦘🐊 I loved his geese. 💕 3d
