LOVED this book! A laugh out loud rom com. This is a #PrideandPrejudice retelling about South Asian Muslims in Toronto but doesn't follow the original too closely. It's the Darcy equivalent Khalid who is the MC actually as he's the one w/ the growing to do. He starts off judgemental, conventional, unable to not do what his mom tells him. His journey is real! His and Ayesha's love story was cute & sexy despite the fact they never even kiss?

I LOVED this book and could not put it down! Amina and her relationships with her family and friends are relatable to young readers, especially readers who may be first or second generation immigrants. While the conclusion felt a bit rushed and too tidy, I enjoyed every moment of this book and would highly recommend it to anyone. #diversebooks #diverseauthors #ownvoice #muslimbooks

Smangela I love the cover! 7y
Chelsibno @Smangela When I first saw the cover on a Litsy review, I knew I had to check it out. I was so excited when I saw that my public library has the book! After reading it, I definitely want to add it to my Elementary School Library‘s collection. We have a sizable Somali population in our community and in our school, so I love it when I find great books that focus on Muslim characters. 7y
emtobiasz This was one of my favorite MG reads last year! 7y

Mehso-so

Telling the story of a young girl learning why her mother chose to wear the hijab and what it means to Muslim women, this book is a great resource for teaching children about hijab in a way that they can understand. It combats many misconceptions non-Muslims have about the hijab, and it does so in a respectful and positive tone. Although I enjoyed reading this short novel, the writing did feel a bit clunky at times. #diversebooks #muslimbooks

I started this last night. It's such a beautiful book so far and an excellent look at Islam and how to build faith as a Muslim.

Dealing with a bought of insomnia again & woke up to hear the devastating news out of Aleppo. I'm heartbroken & horrified for the people of Syria. Sending love to anyone who may have family/friends there. 💔🕯

If you're like me and resort to books to make sense of the world when it all seems terrible, I urge you to check out some of these books by Syrian authors or about the Syrian War. They are #ownvoices except for one & are all recent. 🇸🇾

TheLondonBookworm Brilliant list and a beautiful sentiment ❤️ 8y
andreadmw This is great. 8y
Posemn I agree @BookishFeminist this is frightening news. I also try to sort out my fears and questions with books although I am not as courageous as you - just can't start these books right now, but wow, I do appreciate the list. It will give me something to work with when I can get myself geared up.I know that this is ostrich behavior but if I am going to enjoy any part of the holidays I need to do a little "self preservation" reading..cozies I think. 8y
Laura317 The horror of Aleppo - I will definitely check into some of these. @BookishFeminist any in particular you recommend to start with? 8y
Cortg Thanks for the list. I heard about this on NPR doing a school drop off this morning. So sad. 8y

Day 7 of #Booktober: #LitsyConfessions I borrowed this book from the library for so long that it's mine now. It was overdue and when I thought I was paying fines for some books I was accidentally paying the replacement fee for this book. I was intending to buy it anyway so I just kept it instead of donating it back to the library like I normally would. Oops. 😬😬😬

If you haven't read this yet you should. It's worth the replacement fee! 😂

whatthelog Yess I keep seeing this in my local bookstore! Might have to buy it now 🙈 8y
CynCruz23 Hahaha that happened to me too! (actually a few times 😂) - it's just a sign that you and the book are meant to be. This on my TBR because of your recommendation but I'm still wait listed at the library. Maybe I'll take the risk and just buy it 8y
BookishFeminist @CynCruz23 It's in paperback now so it wouldn't be pricey anymore! I wanted to highlight the whole thing if that helps at all 😂 8y

Man Tiger: A Novel | Eka Kurniawan
post image
Pickpick

Superb. Margio has a supernatural white tiger inside him that comes out when he's under duress. Margio inexplicably murders a man by biting him, leaving the town baffled by how this was possible & why peaceful Margio resorted to violence. Kurniawan spins an intricately woven tale with magical realism that unravels the mystery of two interlinked families & why Margio killed. He explores betrayal, familial love, impulse, & the monsters inside us. 🐅
