There was a lot of info here. Luckily, Goldberg writes in a very engaging, witty, and humorous way; other wise it would've read like a dry history text. The individual POVs from each side were interesting and enlightening and sometimes frustrating. Overall, a very worthy read.

This completed a second bingo for the month; yayyy!

"On the morning of the fine spring day, full of sunshine, that ended with my arrest in Gaza, I woke early from an uneven sleep, dressed, and pushed back to its proper place the desk meant to barricade the door of my hotel room."

Ok, a #BookSpinBingo book for another bingo that I actually have not read ?

Kim Ghattas is an Emmy Award-winning journalist born and raised in Lebanon who has spent 20 years covering the Middle East for the BBC and Financial Times. This well-researched book argues that 1979 set Saudi Arabia and Iran on a path that‘s shaped the Middle East. Ghattas has a readable style and I came away feeling but there are a lot of figures in play here and despite a useful list, I sometimes found myself confused about who was who.

An incredibly valuable resource for those who have no background in the historic conflict, up to modern day. Very clear in laying out events chronologically, does not shy away from identifying unjust actions. Attempts to identify a path to peace, even while acknowledging how far away it may be given the most recent events at time of publication.

Robotswithpersonality The last thing the current situation needs is another now slightly less clueless Westerner weighing in on the discourse, but having absorbed all that was detailed in this book, at least up to October 2023, the evidence of violence on both sides, the overwhelming evidence of colonialism and oppression suffered by Palestinians under Israeli military rule, even as a portion of Israeli journalists, academics, activists, fight for Palestinian rights, possibility of their own state. I am grateful to hear recent news of Canada halting the sale of arms to Israel, and simultaneously understand why activists see it as a watered-down statement of support. Per the author: pressure from the international community is key. 🇵🇸 9mo

Holy ####, this was so good! It probably had something to do with the six cups of whole milk?

I‘ve never seen the pasta shape called for in the grocery store so I used another recommended shape and there wasn‘t enough. Next time, I‘d do 1.5x the amount of pasta and freeze half for another dinner. This also reheated way better than any other Mac and cheese I‘ve ever made.

Eighth recipe for #MtCookbook

Tamra Oh my, I would love it - harissa! 😋 10mo
janeycanuck @Tamra I am not one for spice but OMG, so good! I don‘t think I‘ve dropped the recipe in that shared doc but I will later today. You could easily adjust the spice level up, if you wanted a bit more. 10mo
Tamra @janeycanuck I feel so bad, neither have I! 10mo
mabell Harissa is so good! We just whipped feta and harissa, and it was fabulous. We will definitely have to make this pasta! 9mo
janeycanuck @mabell I still haven‘t gotten the recipe in but definitely in the next day or two! Definitely try this one! 9mo

I‘d watched the multi-part Al Jazeera ‘al nakba‘ and was so impressed by an interviewee speaking fluent Arabic that I looked him up and bought his book. It is a wonderful work spanning the Ottoman occupations (1500‘s) to the mid 00‘s, utilising a vast amount of Arabic material rather than a usual western-heavy approach. Learned so much. If you‘re interested in the region and it‘s events, relevant to us all in many ways - please check this one out.

A comprehensive guide to understanding the Israel-Palestine conflict. Includes in-depth research and a complete history of the land, how the conflict began, its ensuing developments, the political involvement by United States and the West, and also includes references to the October 07, 2023 war. It is required reading for anyone interested in having an unfiltered, unbiased understanding of the crisis in Palestine, and of the 2023 war.
