Loved this #romance #audiobook! Sosa did an incredible job piecing together my fav romance tropes (enemies-to-lovers & off-limits, with a touch of fake relationship & forced proximity) w/ creative twists. I loved how Sosa addressed Lina's emotional shield and how negative stereotypes about Black & Latinx women played into her reluctance to be vulnerable. Also wonderfully done: Lina's career plot & close relationship w/ her Afro-Brazilian family.

Part 1: Labyrinth Lost has one of the most unique premises I've seen so far this year. The world building and development of the culture of brujas is exceptionally done and permeates throughout the story. The novel features diverse characters, something that more fantasy novels need. It's been a while since I read a play, so I was glad to find that Soto's Novio Boy was a comedy. The plot focuses around Rudy preparing for and going out on a date with Patricia. Along the way, Rudy's family and best friend offer their help, whether or not it's wanted. Filled with amusing dialogue and scenes, this teen romantic comedy is a cute read. #play #comedy #latinxbooks

I can never seem to pace myself with Saenz's novels. Something about his writing commands me to drop everything and read them in a day. This one is no different. This collection of first person narrated short stories was excellent. Like its title, this book is savory. Starting with a story of a girl who decides to plant a milpa to help her deal with the recent death of her younger sister, it flows into other stories of grief, from relationships, to childhood, & regret. Yet it does so with kind humor. Jufresa paints beautiful, unique characters while exploring grief, a thread that binds us all, & uses it to examine community building & life in contemporary Mexico City. 🏠🌵

One of the most creative books of poetry & prose I've seen. Zambra, a Chilean author, has written a collection that explores family, love, & social commentary, particularly our lack of critical thinking in education & the mindless repetition we are forced to endure. Written in the format of the Chilean standard exam for college entrance, Zambra forces us to examine how we think & process our lives with multiple choice questions & sardonic wit. 📝

Happy birthday to Sandra Cisneros! To celebrate, we recommend picking up her most recent book, a collection of nonfiction essays that, together, form a memoir of her life and lived experiences. It's full of Cisneros' signature wisdom and grace & is a great peek into her life as a Latina woman in the US, issues of economic inequality, cultural critique, & overcoming misogyny with female identity & sexuality. 🙌🏽

Beneath the stars in plague-ridden Mexico, two warring crime families risk death to exchange the bodies they hold hostage of the other's loved ones while everyone else remains indoors. Herrera paints a stark contrast to Romeo & Juliet w/this novella, adding elements of noir & a deep undercurrent of social commentary on Mexico's violence. But he also explores family, the meaning of love, & how far we'll go to protect it. It reads like poetry. 🌃🌵
