This one was ok. I‘m definitely interested to see where the next one leads but I was a bit bored for most of this first installment.

This was a delightful listen. I thoroughly enjoyed the magical system and the characters. It‘s the first book of a series, but it has a complete story of its own. Faye has grown up as the daughter of the groundskeeper for a wizard, and she‘s learned a lot about magical creatures and the magical properties of plants. When the wizard suddenly dies, she gets caught up in events as his ghost chooses a successor.

#Celebrate LockedRmMystery This song is about how we put on a facade because we have insecurities to hide. I feel like a locked room mystery does the same. Sara McLachlan released this song in 1997. @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

An interesting moving work of historical fiction centred on the life of a true hero, Donaldina Cameron who carried out brave and daring missions to rescue slave girls and prostitutes who were trafficked into America from China. The book is narrated through two perspectives one of Donaldina and the other of a Chinese girl Mei Lien who has been sold into the prostitution ring in China Town. Well written and Completely engaging. Listened on Audible.

For January‘s #AuthorAMonth, I chose the first book in this children‘s series by Ursula (aka T. Kingfisher) in honor of my childhood pet hamster Squeaky. ☺️It‘s a sweet retelling (with a hilariously fun “girl power” twist!) of the Sleeping Beauty tale. Loved Ursula‘s spunky heroine Harriet, her cool illustrations and witty sense of humor. Will definitely be reading more! 🙌🏻

Soubhiville It looks cute. 20h
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I'm so glad I saw this! I didn't realize they were one in the same. I have the first 4 Dragonbreath books by Ursula Vernon and now have an excuse to at least read the first one. 16h

I am distraught. This did not work. The book is, quite simply, uncooked. Needed several more revisions with a strong editor. I don't think this book falling flat damages the His Dark Materials legacy, but I do think as HDM lives on The Book of Dust is likely to go largely unread.

A cute series of chapter books based on Norse mythology, from the creators of the Goddess Girls and Heroes in Training series. It‘s formulaic, and I don‘t love the emphasis on crushes (ditto for GG), but overall these are pretty good.

Man, I have some bones to pick with the parents in this book! As it‘s a memoir it certainly adds to the story overall, but I struggled with wanting to ream them out through the pages. Kathy‘s story of wanting to fit in feels universal even though her experience is unique to her. I‘m glad for the message that she‘s able to extend grace to her past self and that acknowledging that ability makes it easier to extend grace to her present self, too.

This was a great combination of science fiction and fantasy. Lunar Jones has grown up on Mars, struggling to survive and help the other kids he lives with. Then one day he stumbles into a secret bunker and learns more about the dragons that are paired with each planet and moon, and his life will never be the same. There are some great friendships that develop as well as interplanetary adventure.
