The Novel | James Albert Michener

Pickpick

So. Four chapters, four perspectives: the writer, the editor, the critics and the reader (getting Breakfast Club vibes!) I didn't really get it until some pages into The Editor. Then I was gobsmacked. This is seriously brilliant. The writing journey start to finish. The role if The Novel in readership. I've actually underlined sections... I never do that. I keep reading aloud to anyone who listens!!!

Published in 1957, this reads as an immediate view of the 1956 Hungarian revolution and flight of refugees. It‘s also completely a 1950s warning against communism. I was very much invested in the stories of these people who fought for and then fled their homeland.

🎧 I listened to the audio (a few hours while disking today) and found it bearable but not great.

Texreader Excellent book. And tough work today!! 1y
Daisey @Texreader Agree about the book, but as for the work, this was the easiest job of the day and only one with AC. Plus, I got to listen to my book. 1y

#two4Tuesday

1) I‘m with @Catsandbooks — stay inside with the AC; it‘s brutally hot out there
2) Many but most recently James Michener. When I learned he volunteered in the 1950s to help Hungarians escape the Soviets and communism, and how it inspired him to learn all he could about the situation, I was so impressed and I learned immense amounts about a country I knew so little about, #Hungary, thanks to #foodandlit

Thanks for the tag!

Catsandbooks Yay #FoodandLit 🙌🏼 ❤️ 1y

In the 1950s, Michener volunteered to help refugees cross the Bridge at Andau into Austria escaping communism and the Soviet regime, which was putting down a temporarily successful revolt in Budapest, #Hungary. Horrified by what he saw and heard, he investigated in depth what brought about the revolt and its aftermath. This is a profound indictment of communism. Even though written in the 1950s, and being dated, it reverberates in the news from ⬇️

Texreader Ukraine and Putin‘s Soviet-era desire to rob the freedom from his neighbors. An excellent book. I learned vasts amounts about #Hungary and its history. I‘m so glad I found and read this book. But per my prior posts skip the audio. #foodandlit 1y

This is an excellent book about the uprising against communism and the Soviets in 1950s #Hungary. If only the audio weren‘t so blasted awful. DO NOT BUY THE AUDIO version of this book. It is monotonous to the point of robotic. Second worst audio I‘ve ever heard; I bailed the last time one was this bad. But I‘m unable to return the audio. So, I‘ve sped it up as fast as I can listen and have about an hour left. #foodandlit @Catsandbooks

Catsandbooks Oh I'm sorry the audio was so bad! 1y

I‘ve opted for the tagged book to be my next audiobook. It‘s nonfiction about a Hungarian uprising in 1956 against communism and the Soviet Union. #Hungary #foodandlit @Catsandbooks

P.S. I‘ve listened to the first chapter. The narrator is terrible! I‘m going to try to stick it out because this is a history I‘m unfamiliar with and would like to learn more.

Catsandbooks Oh a terrible narrator can really ruin a good book! Hope you can make it through! 1y

The US and the United Nations said nothing when the Russians rolled in and flattened the Hungarian resistance in 1956.

An amazing an heartbreaking read.
