I‘m digging this one, but Chabon is probably one of those authors you either love or don‘t appreciate/connect to. His books are a little whacky pants. This book imagines Sitka, Alaska as the newly established Jewish Homeland for the Eastern European Jews following the Holocaust. Book focuses on Meyer Landsman, a washed up detective attempting to solve the murder of a chess prodigy. #ReadingUSA2020 #Alaska

LeahBergen Oh, we read this in my book club and we all enjoyed it! 👍🏻 (edited) 4y
Megabooks I‘ve tried Chabon...not a fan 😬 4y
Cinfhen See, that‘s exactly my point @LeahBergen @Megabooks I totally respect both of your opinions ✊🏽♥️ 4y

Megabooks @Cinfhen yup!! I respect that he writes well. I just don‘t enjoy it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4y
Cinfhen Like @TrishB says ..... he‘s very #Marmite @Megabooks 😛 4y
TrishB 😁😁 I‘ve never read any of his books! 4y
Cathythoughts I‘ve never tried any either ..... 🤔 4y
Cathythoughts I think I‘m stacking 👍🏻❤️ 4y
Cinfhen It‘s really a strange book @Cathythoughts @TrishB Id definitely say #BorrowNotBuy so if u want to bail you won‘t feel bad 😆I‘m enjoying but the humor is VERY Eastern European Jewish ....it‘s reminding me of my husband‘s grandparents with all their Yiddish expressions 🧡 4y
Billypar I loved this one! It was my first Chabon, might still be my favorite. 4y
Cinfhen All that Yiddish is making me kvell @Billypar I LOVE IT!!!! I really liked this one too, but if I recall you weren‘t a fan 👉🏽 4y
Billypar Oh no, I really liked Moonglow too- it was 5 stars. I haven't been disappointed by any of the four Chabon's I've read so far. 4y
Cinfhen Maybe it was @vivastory who didn‘t like Moonglow @Billypar ??!?!!? 4y
vivastory I haven't read Moonglow yet. I've only read a couple Chabon and I loved both of them 4y
Cinfhen Darn, can‘t remember who it was who thought Moonglow missed the mark @vivastory 🤭 4y
Centique @Cinfhen it was me that didn‘t like Moonglow! I had really high expectations cos I loved Kavalier and Clay. You win some, you lose some 😘 4y
britt_brooke I loved Kavalier and Clay, but did not care for Moonglow. This has been in my TBR for ages. (edited) 4y
Cinfhen Ahhhh, so it might be one of you 2 I was thinking about @britt_brooke @Centique It just goes to show how subjective a book review can be. I‘m enjoying this one but it‘s starting to feel a little too gimmicky 🙄 4y

The Corrections | Jonathan Franzen
post image

I‘ve never read Franzen. (embarrassing, yes 🙈)

I‘ve heard both referred to as the great modern American novel.

Which do you recommend I read first?

#thecorrections or #freedom ???

#helpmechose #whichfranzenfirst #literaryfiction

TheBookStacker I‘ve only read Freedom which I enjoyed. 6y
zsuzsanna_reads I'm interested in the answer too, I haven't read them either! 6y
CarolynM I bailed on The Corrections at the page 100 threshold. I just didn't care about the characters and wasn't interested in the story. 6y

Bklover I bailed on Freedom. Haven‘t tried anything else 6y
LauraJ Not embarrassing. I‘ve been less than impressed. 6y
gradcat I read both, loved both...so I guess that makes these books #marmite! I‘m so proud of myself—I learned the marmite reference from Littens!! (edited) 6y
Silvertongue I just read The Corrections last month but it was pretty painful to get through—nearly all the characters are exquisitely terrible people. Which I guess is the point of the book? Still working on the meaning of the book~ I thought about not finishing but it was a rec from a good friend. 6y
JacqMac I hated The Corrections so much. I wish I had bailed. Don‘t be embarrassed. 6y
Blaire I liked both, but I read the corrections ages ago (when it first came out 2001?). I‘d prob read it first. I don‘t mind unlikeable characters. 6y
Creadnorthey Corrections is exquisite- no matter the difficult characters. I took this family drama with a loving dose of black humor. 6y
JLaurenceCohen You aren't alone--I still haven't read him either 6y
