Thinking about this time in history gives me the chills. I remember that image on tv where King and his compatriots are standing on the small balcony of a motel room moments before he is killed. Dyson does an in-depth analysis of Martin‘s speeches, his fears, his visions, and their relationship to politics and religion. It is a fact that the FBI made MLK‘s and his family‘s lives a living hell.

Belle, the Last Mule at Gee's Bend: A Civil Rights Story | Bettye Stroud, Calvin Alexander Ramsey
post image

Belle, the Last Mule at Gee‘s bend is a heartwarming HF by C.A. Ramsey and B. Stroud, illustrated by J. Holyfield. In this story, a boy learns that an ordinary looking mule is quite special. This mule, Belle, had a role in this small town‘s fight for equal rights and was even part of Dr. King‘s funeral procession. I recommend this book as one piece of an AS about author Bettye Stroud.

nquintus The resource linked above is a basic breakdown of how to roll out an AS unit in an elementary classroom. This AS would give students plenty of opportunities to connect prior knowledge and personal experience to these stories, in addition to doing related vocabulary, writing, art, and history-related activities. These would meet ESOL strategy 2: promote cooperation and UDL #8.3: foster collaboration and community. 4y
DrSpalding This is a new book for me! Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres. Great idea to perform an author study if this author has numerous books. Sounds like a good one to integrate into the social studies curriculum. 4y

• Read in full yesterday for a last-minute #BookishFirst #JanuaryBookBingo prompt for "a book about the civil rights movement." I didn‘t even plan it, I just picked it up and read it and found the prompt later. It was wonderful, by the way, and I'm better for having read it. Just in time for #BlackHistoryMonth ???? •

Timely bio of a brave, intelligent leader. Good for grades 1-3. Illustrations depict slavery, segregation, & the (continuing) struggle for civil rights. Warning: Final illustration depicts MLK's assassination. Not graphic illustration, but will need to be explained in age-appropriate terms. #MLKjr #racism #booksthatteach #thestrugglecontinues

Interesting analysis of MLK Jr's impact before and after his death and how his death immortalized and re-popularized him. I enjoyed the analysis of subsequent leaders of the movement, specifically Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton.

I would like to read Michael Eric Dyson's analysis of the Black Lives Matter movement, focusing on the seemingly decentralized leadership style.

[Longer review, cont in comments] Fascinating look at MLK's legacy. MLK is a frequently whitewashed figure. We look at his major successes without his underlying beliefs & flaws and paint him as a hero instead of the complex man he was. This book does his legacy justice & humanizes MLK in a way I haven't quite seen before. It examines his mental health struggles, religion/politics, & interpersonal struggles within the Civil Rights Movement. 👇🏼

BookishFeminist It also examines the impact his assassination had on his legacy & the future of Black rights. It also looks at how influential he was in the Black community, our ongoing racial struggles, his successors in the movement. Dyson has a strong analysis of Obama's presidential campaign (this was pub 2008 before he was elected), Kennedy's and Clinton's presidencies, & pop culture. Highly recommend to get a fuller picture of his life. ✊🏾 8y

vivastory Fantastic review 👍 👏 👏 8y
moranadatter How well does it handle his politics? Does it touch on the labor movement? 8y
BookishFeminist @kmdartist It handles them very objectively & discusses his socialism and anti-war stances at length. It touches on the labor movement some but that's more Du Bois's angle than it was King's. 8y
Caterina How much does it include his (super amazing) wife? 8y
BookishFeminist @Caterina Some but not much! It's pretty strictly focused on his legacy. But Coretta's memoir just came out & you might be interested in that: 8y
