Forget Me Not | Alyson Derrick

Mehso-so

A little gay YA romance, Stevie has amnesia and has to remember Norah and their relationship. This was a bit too YA for me - a bit too much cheese and dramatic teens but that is on me I bought this last year on a stop over in Edmonton, I also thought it was Canadian but about half in I realized they were in Philly, so I just fully picked up the wrong book apparently and it didn't really work for me. Overall though it was fine just not my taste

Lily‘s high school year is greatly complicated by McCarthyism, developing feelings for a new friend, & a desire to shoot for the stars.

This was a hard listen, but fantastic. High school stories are always tricky for me, but this was beautifully done. Lily‘s strength of character dealing w/ homophobia, her father getting investigated for links to communism, & a toxic friendship was amazing. Wasn‘t a fan of the time skip @ the end. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

TheBookHippie We absolutely loved this when we read it for #sundaybuddyread and it‘s follow up book. 6d

shortsarahrose Totally agree with your review. I thought it handled the emotional elements of the story well without getting overly angsty like some YA. I didn‘t mind the time jump, but also didn‘t think it was necessary. 6d
BookmarkTavern @shortsarahrose My biggest issue with time skips is usually they skip over a time I wanted to see! I wanted to see Lily settle in with Judy, talk to her about the space program, become the more confident young woman she was at the end. @TheBookHippie I‘ll have to add the follow up to my TBR! (edited) 6d
shortsarahrose Yes! I think that could‘ve been a good sequel book, perhaps with flashbacks to Judy as a young person (I would also like to know more of her story). 6d
PuddleJumper Sounds good! I was torn between this one and Scatter of Light 6d

I love my chill Saturday coffee shop time. Next up for #AuldLangSpine is the tagged book. The writing style so far is great.

Billypar Nice! This might be my favorite read of 2024 🫀 Right now, I'm still loving Tom Lake on audio, and I just started Safekeep, which has a very intriguing opening setup. Seems like disaster is unavoidable 🫣 1w

In the Dream House: A Memoir | Carmen Maria Machado
post image

Sometimes, I have these dreams where I just wake up with a word in my head or a conviction. Last night, I had both. The word was “bachata.” After a quick Instagram video dive, I determined that learning bachata is not my destiny. 😅💃 The unrelated conviction, however, is that I‘m meant to explore literary magazines. Right now, I read none. So…

Which cool literary magazines am I sleeping on?

Ruthiella The only one I know of is Barrelhouse because I listen to the Bookfight podcast: https://www.barrelhousemag.com/ (edited) 1w

Billypar I don't read any literary magazines, but Xenia Rubinos is a favorite musical artist of mine, and this song once sent me down a bachata rabbit hole (listening not dancing!): https://open.spotify.com/track/563rsNbDbYottIHTGmDjrL?si=HN48e3F9SPKleqOimIWTqg 1w

The Girl from the Sea | Molly Knox Ostertag
post image

The queer subtext in Ostertag's books finally... comes to the surface. Gorgeously illustrated graphic novel about friendship and peer pressure, first love and coming out. Like everyone else, I was dying for an epilogue, but can understand why the author might not have wanted to provide one.

This was a perfect choice for “Pilot Islet.“ #FourFoursin25 @lauredhel

Lauredhel Making better progress than I am, congrats 2w

Happy Accidents | Jane Lynch

Pickpick

1-7-25: My 3rd book of 2025! My 3rd memoir in a row. Thankfully, this one was written by someone who is alive and well and happy. Jane Lynch is a funny lady, I was first introduced to her on Glee and then I backtracked into all her movie appearances. She never ceases to crack me up with her wild antics. She has had a very interesting life so far. A few low points but nothing too dramatic. This was just a nice read compared to the last two.

Listened to Huntress for January's #QueerBC with @PuddleJumper. While I really enjoyed the story and the worldbuilding, the romance fell a little flat for me. What I really enjoyed was the discussion of guilt vs remorse and what is/isn't acceptable for the "greater good". It's 4⭐️ from me :)

So here are the books for my January #ReadBannedBooks and my #FriendsPick challenge. I‘m excited to get the chance to experience books that have been banned for various reasons. But I think my favorite thing about this challenge is reading what my friends pick for me. All of them are so very different and I get to experience new styles of writing. Sometimes it even gets me out of my comfort zone, which I think is good.
