@Prairiegirl_reading This isn't the whole lot, but I have something of a collection of Japanese and Korean cosy healing fiction... my plan is to read the lot and make a video about which are best... it may take a while though hehe

Japan 1903:Ichi,daughter of an ama&a fisherman from Iojima, is sold into prostitution. In the Shinonome brothel she is trained in the art of pleasing customers but also attends school where Tetsuko,a failed prostitute from the family of a samurai, teaches “writing to women trapped in the prison of bestial desire” and finally to read and understand their account books since the women are often charged too much for food or clothes&deliberately kept

Anna40 Dependent on their owners. The novel is based on a real historic event when prostitutes went on Labor strike inspired by a shipyard strike in the UK. I loved the beautiful language, the rich depiction of place, the women& their struggles. “ ‘Because prostitutes are not human‘, they said. ‘Not human?‘ ‘Lower than humans.‘ Shinonome bit her lip and listened in silence as Tetsuko‘s voice continued like the steady dripping of rain. ‘The law (Livestoc (edited) 2mo
Anna40 Emancipation law) stated that prostitutes have lost their human rights and therefore are the same as livestock. (…)‘ “ 2mo

I love when my husband returns from Japan with a new Kokeshi for my shelves! He travels there for work, and maybe one day I‘ll get to go with him. For now, our boys‘ school and sports keep me in Tennessee. 😩🫠😂 It‘s fine. But I‘m going eventually.

Texreader How awesome are those!! 2mo
BarbaraBB Awesome. I buy them too when in Japan but only have three so far so I envy you and especially your husband 😀 2mo

1. I picked up the tagged book from my free cycle group.
2. The house was at the end of a long drive in the woods, and when I got there I saw a bald eagle in the trees.
3. Then I went to my favorite indie bookstore followed by a late lunch of loaded fries and spiced winter ale.
4. I spent several hours waiting while my car was being serviced, but I had a good book (and some entertaining canned TV programming) to keep me occupied.

Susanita 5. Someone else in my free cycle group wanted our punch bowl which we‘ve used once in 30+ years. 3mo

One of my new year‘s resolutions is to read a Japanese novel each month. This is my first and it wasn‘t great.
It‘s two short stories. The first is about a couple having sex for 4 days in a so called Love Hotel on the brink of the Iraq War. That one is pretty good although I don‘t get it completely.
The second is about a woman who stays in bed for a whole day, thinking of her home and her husband. That one I didn‘t get at all 🤷🏻‍♀️

lauraisntwilder I read this in 2020, but I apparently never posted about it on Litsty. I gave it a lukewarm rating on StoryGraph at the time. However, I vividly remembered it when I read your review, so it must've made an impression. 4mo
squirrelbrain Hopefully the next ones will be better! 4mo
tpixie Double check, but I think this was Japanese I really enjoyed it 4mo

#WeeklyForecast 01/25

I am reading Wolf at the Table, which I am enjoying. Next will be the tagged book. In 2025 I want to read at least one Japanese book a month.
And because I am still off work I hope I‘ll find the time to start the Rooney, a good beginning of the new year I hope!

AmyG I just started Intermezzo on audio. Seems to be a well-liked book. 🤞🏻 4mo
Ruthiella I also like to start the new year off with a positive reading experience ! 4mo
sarahbarnes I love the Japanese novel goal! 4mo

squirrelbrain I started Intermezzo on audio @amyg but it didn‘t work for me (not the book, more that I struggled to hear the narrator over road noise 🤷‍♀️). I saw it was half-price on Amazon *and* I had a voucher, so guess what arrived today?! ☺️ 4mo
BarbaraBB @sarahbarnes I always love them so much, I thought I should read them more regularly 🤓 4mo
sarahbarnes I feel the same way! 4mo
