Pickpick

After seeing a review of her trilogy of novels recently, I became curious about Kristóf‘s writing. I was not able to find the novels at my library but found her memoir.

This is a very short read, but spoke to me in so many levels. In this book, and through short vignettes, she talks about what it felt like to emigrate to Switzerland as a refugee, learning French and publishing all her work in a language she had to learn from scratch.

Loved!

Another book that took me longer to finish than it should have. These are older stories as Csath was writing in the early 1900s. The stories themselves were quite oppressive. Csath was an opium addict who eventually murdered his wife before committing suicide and many of his stories reflect the noise in his head. CW for animal abuse, etc. One of the few Europa that wasn‘t really for me. #europacollective

Beautiful adaption with Helen Mirren! Streaming on Amazon.

I appreciate the complicated & raw relationship between the two women.

The Case Worker | Gyorgy Konrad

This book was a trip. The narrator is a social worker who mostly works with children (I think). I enjoyed this behind-the-scenes look, the disjointed nature of the narrator‘s thoughts. Social work, work with the public in general, can you leave you feeling jaded and cynical, and maybe even a little deadened to things that should shock you. I look forward to reading more by Konrad. 241/1,001 #1001Books

BarbaraBB I loved all three of the Konrad books on the list. Especially 9mo
AshleyHoss820 @BarbaraBB That is so good to hear!! I‘m excited to read it! Thank you! ☺️ 9mo

Suet624 I didn't realize just how many novels Szabo wrote. Apparently I need to do a bit of shopping. 1y
Simona @LeahBergen @Amiable @charl08 Day after and I still feel the sugar rush 😁 1y
Simona @BarbaraBB I‘m on 70% and I‘m not completely sure if it‘s pick🤔 1y
Simona @Suet624 I don‘t know how many of her books have been translated into English, but yes, she was prolific writer. 1y

3⭐️ Not my favorite Szabo 😑 I didn‘t enjoy the jumping around bits. It‘s an inner monologue addressed to the narrator‘s dead lover. The narrator is Eszter Enczy, an actress who really dislikes her friend Angela she‘s practically consumed by hatred 🔥 It took me a while to connect with Eszter although her bitterness tired me down. An interesting way of story-telling but not so much on the reading enjoyment

I have been reading this book for 10 days and I just crossed the halfway mark. When one‘s mood doesn‘t not fit the book and vice versa….
