I worked for the government for 35+ years at three different organizations. I‘ll come back to that later. As a #longtimefed I have a lot of thoughts about…all this. For a host of reasons I‘m reluctant to share much on “public” media for now, but I consider Litsy MY “safe space.”

I don‘t want to hurt anyone‘s feelings or make anyone uncomfortable, and I don‘t expect to change anyone‘s mind. If you want to ignore these posts, you can mute the tag.

Aims42 I would LOVE to hear/read your thoughts on these current events! Bring it on 🩷👍 4d
Tamra 👏🏾 My family has a long history of fed & state government service. Husband and I have made careers in state service. People don‘t seem to understand how society benefits. 4d

ImperfectCJ I suspect there aren't many people not affected by the cuts, even if they aren't federal employees/contractors. My dad was career military and has been a federal contractor since his military retirement. My spouse is in the biosciences, which rely on federal grants to fund drug discovery and not only further the development of life-saving medications but make the US THE place for scientists. The changes will have profound ripple effects. 3d
Susanita @ImperfectCJ @Tamra Absolutely. I‘ll get into this in my own way, but there are so many effects of these changes that will reverberate for a long time. 3d
The_Penniless_Author Another long-time fed here who would love to hear what you have to say. Hope you're hanging in there and weathering the storm as best you can. 3d
Susanita @The_Penniless_Author Thankfully, I retired a few years ago. Still, I can‘t help but notice what‘s happening with a bit of alarm. I hope you‘re hanging in there too! 3d
Suet624 Always happy to hear your thoughts. I was thinking this morning that our economy is so fragile and there are so many interconnecting parts to it. What they are doing right now to the economy alone is so dangerous. And of course there are so many other things to protest as well - health and safety and ... on and on and on. 3d

The_Penniless_Author Glad to hear you got out in time. Unfortunately, I don't think anyone is going to come out of this unscathed. I wish more people could understand just what's coming down the pike. Anyway, solidarity and best wishes to you and your loved ones. 3d

People weren‘t willing to see the truth the last time we fought for it. This time, I think, as I shake out my newly short hair, colored with streaks of bright red and white, I am going to make the truth impossible for them to ignore.

A book explaining what the white house is, like who lives there, what the Oval Office is, and White House traditions. It would be good to build civic knowledge in young grades!

Step 2 in my newfound righteous journey: To refresh my general knowledge of American government. Conrad‘s book is nonpartisan as advertised. It goes not only through inner government workings but the topics that were big at the time it was published in 2008 (surprise! they haven‘t changed much). Still, a bit outdated.

The Great Courses are fantastic and in depth. Prof. Victor‘s course is nonpartisan and mentions Trump, so is very recent.

Suet624 I‘m appreciative that you‘re reading this material. It should be a required subject in high school. 3mo

If you have an interest in how our government has become so entrenched in our economy and eroded our private rights, this is your book. It is eye opening to see how they've done it and how so many went along.

How Democracies Die | Steven Levitsky, Daniel Ziblatt

This book feels like old news now, but still so important to read. The authors lay out the warnings of a democracy in crisis, and all the moves to power that authoritarians make: Trump met (and continues to meet) each one of them. They discuss how these events unfolded in other countries, America‘s political history, and why democracy is so fragile. Voting and institutions alone will not save us. Highly recommend.
