#classicschallenge 2025 @Lunakay #2025reads #poetry

18 pieces of prose poetry of varying length scattered with wonderful imagery.

I read “A Hunger Artist: Four Stories“ by Franz Kafka last year, it was beautiful though not a happy read but since then I've become more interested in Kafka‘s work.

Lunakay Great choice!✒️📜🤗 3mo
AnishaInkspill @Lunakay finding poetry here was a surprise, I wouldn't have made the connect without reading it 3mo

A Hunger-Artist: Four Stories

I‘m left speechless, my first response is the four stories that make this mini collection are sad as they are beautiful in how they each show the human condition.

The four stories are: First Sorrow; Little Women; A Hunger-Artist; and Josefine the singer, or the Mouse People

Darklunarose He is beautiful. Cats make beautiful companions. 8mo
SpookyDonut @hannah-leeloo He normally does too! Or he‘ll chew on it if I‘m actively reading and not paying attention to him. 8mo
SpookyDonut @Darklunarose He‘s the biggest pain in the butt I‘ve ever had to deal with. He‘s my driveway stray that I took in at 5 weeks old and let me tell you, he has taught me all about that orange cat behavior. I love him. 8mo
Darklunarose @SpookyDonut must be the tabby! I have a brown tabby that was a street rescue as a baby, and my god I have never known a cat like him. It‘s got to be tabitude 8mo

Translated by Michael Hofmann & published in 2020, the seventy-four pieces collected here are absurd sketches, thought experiments, claustrophobic musings & a couple even manage to stand shoulder to shoulder with some of his better work. If you want a kick, look at the customer feedback online of people who, because of the cover design, thought that they had received a copy that was marked up/bled on.

BarbaraBB You‘re in the mood for Kafka after reading The Radiance of the King? 3y
vivastory @BarbaraBB I was! I had this checked out from the library & I figured it was as good of a time as any 3y

I love unexpected connections between recent reads. What I think that Kafka means in the last line is that during Prometheus Bound the public nature of the punishment is discussed. As Prometheus says, Zeus could have sent him to Tartarus. Yet he had him "shackled to a peak in the Caucasus." I can see why this play, as it's concerned with the nature of punishment, would interest Kafka.
