“Deadly Animals“ by Marie Tierney is a chilling and unforgettable thriller set in 1980s Birmingham, England. This book had me hooked from the first page and kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end.

This one was slightly reminiscent of Alan Bradley's Flavia de Luce series, only somewhat more gruesome and the teenage girl character in this one (Ava) is fascinated with studying the dead (a young 'Scarpetta'). I thought it was a wonderful debut novel and really enjoyed Ava. I do wish the detective Seth was better developed, but suspect that will come in subsequent books (fingers crossed). Thanks to Edelweiss+ for the digital ARC. 4.25/5!

I started reading this after work yesterday and cannot out it down. It is so creepy. One of those books that you can feel your breathing get faster as you read and can barely wait to turn the page.

Set in 1980 Birmingham, this mystery comes from two perspectives trying to solve a disturbing string of murders— an investigation by 14-year-old Ava, involved since a discovery during her own pursuits of her version of a Body Farm on the local roadkill, & the more official one by the police. Well-performed, I definitely found myself listening at every chance & loved that the ending interview confirms that this isn‘t the last we‘ll see of Ava!

Yikes!! This was the scariest, tensest listen that I‘ve encountered in a while. I‘d heard the hype, but still found this to be an electrifying debut with such immediacy that it‘s hard to stop listening for any reason! The book opens with a mother of two young children startling awake at the sound of a person in their house in the middle of the night. The tension & horror begins there… and between this fresh horror, we learn the family‘s backstory.

DogMomIrene I loved this one too! I was scared that it might be too scary, but I read it so quickly I don‘t think I had time to freak out. 1mo
TorieStorieS @DogMomIrene I think if I listened to this at night and home alone, rather than mostly walking my dog in the daylight, it would have been too scary… I gasped out loud a few times and frightened my dog, too! 1mo
DogMomIrene @TorieStorieS Agree! I was reading at night, but my husband was around. And I‘ve done the gasping reaction in the car with my dogs and I have to reassure them that I‘m okay. 1mo

TorieStorieS @DogMomIrene I‘m glad I‘m not the only one who accidentally gives their dog a scare! I did scare my husband after reading SOMEONE IN THE ATTIC because I opened up our attic to take the picture which I guess sounded creepy to him! 🤣 If you haven‘t read that one, I definitely recommend it! Frustrating characters but an addictive read like this one! 1mo
DogMomIrene @TorieStorieS I just added Someone in the Attic to my TBR earlier in October. I can‘t remember if I heard about it here or Bookstagram, but even with frustrating characters, the plot sounds really creepy. And I had an apartment years ago where I wondered if someone was living in the crawl space above my unit. 1mo
TorieStorieS @DogMomIrene Eeeekkk!! That‘s horrifying!! I got my copy through Book of the Month club and have since listened to another book from the author on audio! 1mo

I really liked this one. It is a British police procedural with the added twist of the woman in charge (Kat) being told she has to work with and evaluate an AI assistant (Lock). They are supposed to be working cold cases, but when they get a lead the case becomes active. Her reluctance to use the AI & it's eerie human like presence add both interest and humour. I was happy to see that there is a sequel. Thanks to NetGalley for the digital ARC. 5/5

I was SO EXCITED to get another Jackson Brodie book! I like pretty much anything Atkinson writes but this one was a welcome return to my favorite stuff—snarky dry British humor, entangled ridiculous plot lines, darkly comic morbidity, and a visit with Brodie. I giggled a lot through the last few chapters. This had a Clue whodunnit vibe that was extra fun. Just a good time.

Ruthiella So looking forward to this. But because I own it, I keep pushing it back for library books! 2mo

I was so pleasantly surprised by this book. The premise didn't seem like one I was going to like this much. Now I can't wait for the next book. This one is so good. Jo Callaghan's debut novel is a winner.
Please read the heartfelt Acknowledgments at the ending. Parts sure made me cry. I'm so sorry for her loss. So so sorry.
