Mehso-so

This was just ‘meh‘ for me.
Through much of the beginning I was bored, I suppose there was some humour there granted it was a bit eye-roll inducing for me. Maybe I‘ve just moved on from this series 🤷🏻‍♀️

TrishB I was really disappointed in this one too. 5d
Bookish.SAM @TrishB well… at least glad to know it wasn‘t just me! It‘ve been a while since I read the others in the series so for a minute I was wondering if I just remembered them all wrong 🤣 This one just felt … different. 5d

I love Kate Atkinson and was thrilled to see there was a new entry in her Jackson Brodie series. When Brodie is hired to find a missing painting, he enlists the help of detective Reggie Chase. The trail leads them to Burton Makepeace, the estate of an aristocratic family who've turned to hosting murder mystery themed evenings for extra cash. Wry humor and uniquely human characters make this a delightful read, as expected from this brilliant series

Ruthiella I loved this too! Big fan of Atkinson. 6d
CarolynM One of my favourite books last year. I loved it. 4d

Well, this was yet another tough decision for which October read would be one of my #12BooksOf2024! But, I had to ultimately go with the scariest and the most tense (a very close runner-up was SOMEONE IN THE ATTIC which had me just checking on our own attic before taking my review picture!🤣) which was this listen. Not only did it scare me, but my gasping out loud while walking our dog passed along the scares to him! So this one even scared him!

Andrew65 October and being scared, goes together like fish and chips. 3w
TorieStorieS @Andrew65 Precisely!! And I feel like over the years, I have grown a tolerance to a real scare— but this one delivers!! Though, the Andrea Mara book did, too! 2w

#12Booksof2024

I really loved being back with Jackson Brodie in this latest novel, which I read in November. I love Atkinson overall and I particularly love her Jackson Brodie books. They are both melancholy and hopeful and can also make me laugh.

Thirteen year old Ava Bonney is different.
While her friends play , Ava searches for roadkill.
Then, one night, Ava sneaks out to find a fox. She instead stumbles upon the body of Mickey Grant.
Detective Seth Delahayne has never seen a murder case like this one, as though the victim was set upon by a wild animal.
Nor has he met anyone like Ava , so determines and ... unusual.
When another boy goes missing , he has no idea that Ava will help him.

#12BooksOf2024 September

I‘m always abuzz with anticipation for a new Kate Atkinson, and even more so when it‘s a Jackson Brodie story. She has never disappointed me. I loved this one in September.

Rissreadswithcats I think I might read this series this year. 💛 3w
TheKidUpstairs I haven't read any Jackson Brodie beyond Case Histories. Will that matter going into this one? Or should I catch up on the series before reading it? 3w
Ruthiella This will be my November pick! 3w

Andrew65 I still need to get to this. 3w
CarolynM @TheKidUpstairs I think it could be read as a stand alone but you will definitely enjoy it more if you‘ve read the others. 3w
TheKidUpstairs @CarolynM thank you! I think I might make it a project to catch up on the series this year before I read it. It's not a super long series, so I think I can do it! 3w
CarolynM @Rissreads It‘s a wonderful series, but remember that the “murder mystery” is only the device for telling a story about the characters. If you expect a gripping whodunnit you‘ll be disappointed. 3w
CarolynM @TheKidUpstairs What I just said to @Rissreads applies to you too 🙂 I think what she‘s really interested in exploring are the far reaching consequences of violence and the way the past affects the future. Plus a bit of understated social commentary. 3w
CarolynM @Ruthiella It‘s a great book🙂 3w
TheKidUpstairs @CarolynM I remember that with Case Histories. I really liked the more “literary“ character/societal study side to the books, rather than a traditional detective murder mystery (not that there's anything wrong with those!). I had always meant to continue the series, but never have, so this will be a good reason to get to it! 3w
Rissreadswithcats That‘s exactly my kind of detective book. I have always been more into the people and their lives. Sold! 🤣 3w

Happy New Year, dear Litsy friends. May the road ahead travel well for all of us.

I like this series, and I‘m happy to say I finished book # 2 two years after starting it. In one night. Books are like that though, eh? The mix of supernatural + police procedural + solid characters and writing really works. Definitely recommend. And yes, it‘s set at Christmas.

Seabreeze_Reader Happy New Year! 🎉 3w

The suspense really grabbed me in this thriller. The tension was written quite well. I was actually scared. I'm never scared.

Erinreadsthebooks It‘s so good and should be getting way more hype! 4w
DogMomIrene I was scared too! I read this one so fast because I needed all the answers. 4w
