24: #Carriages

The first time I even cared to learn the difference between carriages was when I started reading Sherlock Holmes. What‘s the difference between a phaeton and a post-chaise!? 😂😂😂 Thank heavens for Google, man.

CrowCAH 🙌🏻 I agree! Google 7y
AshleyHoss820 @CrowCAH I think about all those times growing up and having to use encyclopedias for everything...😂😂😂 7y

For #carriages I just have to go with Steampunk Darcy again, because all their carriages are airborne and because this made me both giggle and groan: The Handsome Handsom Cab Company. 🙄😆

Going for a different sort of #carriage, a railway carriage, with this Poem from Robert Louis Stevenson. This one is titled From a Railway Carriage and was published in his A Child”s Garden Of Verses. It is a favourite of mine. #150PNPCoverParty #carriages

merelybookish Good one! I love that collection. 7y
robinb Oh, I ❤️ this! 7y
CarolynM This is the poem that made me love poetry. I think I was about 8 years old when I first read it in a school text book. We had been using the book for some boring grammar exercise or some such, and having finished I was flicking through it looking for something more interesting when I found this. I clearly remember how thrilled I was by the rhythm and the rhyme. Thank you for reminding me. 7y
LeahBergen This is wonderful! 😍😍 7y
CrowCAH That is beautifully written! I actually didn‘t catch that it was about a train 🚂 7y

mabell Lovely covers! 😍 I didn't realize it before, but carriages were central to the plot of the Nonesuch. The most vital confidences occurred in carriages. 😉 7y

A Memoir of Jane Austen | Edward James Austen-Leigh

The #150PnPCoverParty photo challenge has put me in the mood for some new Austen-related-something in my life, so it felt like the perfect time to pick up this memoir written by her nephew.

Fun fact: a one-horse-drawn carriage was no way to transport a lady around, because it would be to uncomfortable for her fragile body #carriages

LeahBergen You‘re all set for a perfect evening. ❤️❤️ 7y

Lady Catherine is definitely a snob about #carriages (among other things) and quite fond of her barouche landau.

What kind of car do you think she would drive today?

@CrowCAH @LeahBergen

Lcsmcat A Mercedes. 7y

Sherlock Holmes was always hailing a hansom- the Victorian taxi cab. It was a two-wheeled carriage drawn by one horse where the driver sat behind the cab and the reins passed over the top. The hansom was a sturdy, well balanced vehicle that proved very useful for getting around in large cities.
