OMG, this book! 😍 It totally stole my heart in a “A Man Called Ove” sort of way. I had tears in my eyes by the end. Loved it!

kspenmoll Oh! Your words are a wonderful incentive for me to read this book! 2d

I‘m struck by this assertion: A book does not exist until it is read. A writer writes the words. But WE as the reader decide what the story is. What a fabulous and provocative topic of discussion for a book club.

Amiable @dabbe Two … or 2 million! 🤯 2d
Amiable @Sace @Deblovestoread Isn‘t this interesting? What follows logically then is that every book actually exists as multiple books, depending on how many people have read it. So there are literally millions of versions of, say, “War & Peace.” Some that exist now and many others that existed years ago. 2d
AnnCrystal @Amiable “every book actually exists as multiple books“

That is an interesting theory!

Lcsmcat @Amiable Absolutely! There are things that “change” as each person/generation brings their own experiences to a book. 2d

This was such an easy, fast read. I found it enjoyable even though it had sad undertones. I always seem to enjoy books about books.

Themes: Historical Fiction, Dual Timelines & Multiple POVs, Magical Realism

This book made me laugh, made me tear up, made me angry, but I loved it! Usually with mutilple POVs there‘s always “that” character that I dread when their name is on the chapter heading, but I loved Opaline (even though I kept wanted to call her Ovaltine), Martha and Henry. And Madame Bowden too! A solid pick to read if you want something truly magical!

Yeongju leaves her old life behind and opens a bookshop in Hyunam-Dong. She learns how to navigate her dreams along with reality and societal expectation, makes a group of friends, and everyone helps each other think about where they are in life and where they want to be.
I have to say that some bits felt particularly poignant as I am a bit fed up with work at the moment. So it definitely left me with some things to think about!

How to read a book, according to “How To Read a Book”: slowly – savoring the story, the “meanwhile”, the turn of phrase that makes you catch your breath just a little. The characters were so relatable and I felt like I would want to meet them and call them friends. So thoughtfully written and full of soul filled moments that make you think about life, love and the beauty of human connection.

Book 1/100 of the year.
