That's the good stuff right there. I think I remember
having a similar experience with the first book in
this series, that I was enjoying myself riding along
with the attempted mystery solving, then got a bit
iffy in the reveal, as there were certain things I'd
already guessed, and then other things I hadn't had
a clue about that were just barely believable, and
then it was how the book actually ended that
settled it for me, 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? in focusing back on the characters
and their relationships, experiences. Stevenson
provides an empathetic, yet all-too-human
perspective in Ernest and it makes all the difference in having him as the narrator. Sometimes the interpersonal drama leans thriller-esque, but I know I'll always have one character I actually like.Though that other theme running through the book leading to the epilogue is what truly made it for me.
3d
Robotswithpersonality 3/? As always I'll caveat that I'm a fairly gullible, easy going mystery reader so those in it primarily for the puzzles may not be as entertained as I was. 3d
Robotswithpersonality 4/5 I recognize that it's a personal preference that violence against women, SA, not be a plot point, even though elements of the scenario are tragically similar to real life publicized accounts. 3d
Robotswithpersonality 5/5 In this sense the formula and tropes that Stevenson plays with may work in my favour. Having used it so prominently once, it's unlikely to return in the next book. I look forward to continuing in the series, hopefully the author plans to do so! 3d

Reading this weird book, weird as nothing seems to happen but I am intrigued enough to keep reading. Chapter 14 and the first murder is discovered. Have not read Everyone In My Family Has Murdered Someone but may have to if I can just get through this book.

A novel with deep character development. I cared about each unique character as they were developed by the author. Their separate struggles in processing a single traumatic life event. A read that leaves you cheering for everyone. Also interesting setting of urban Australia. I love traveling a bit in a good read!

I liked the mysteries/ reasons for the murders and I loved the setting- on a luxury train through the middle of Australia. But I've already grown tired of the breaking of the 4th wall and the conceit that narrator is talking us through their writing process as the book progresses. Mostly a pick but I'm going to try to avoid this type of plot for a while.

Well worn chestnut that needs to be retired. Not a lot of nuance in assuming popular automatically equals dreck.

This book is so not what the cover implies! Loved it, but not a fan of the open-ended ending!

Karisimo Just noticed the tagged book lists the wrong first name of the author 🤦🏻‍♀️ 7d

I read this oh so long ago…

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I love how people still kind of think it‘s a true story or at least based on one. Did you ever read the final chapter that “solves” the mystery? I‘m glad it didn‘t make the final cut tbh, I don‘t think it would have achieved that same level of cultural significance with it. 7d
kspenmoll @thegirlwiththelibrarybag I never did read that final chapter. I agree with you- this book & its mystery is better left to the imagination of the reader! 7d
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @kspenmoll, can‘t say I recommend it. The 1975 Peter Weir movie is pretty good too - I think it‘s been adapted more recently but I haven‘t seen it. 7d
