A Town Called Solace | Mary Lawson
post image
Pickpick

This book gave me massive Lucy Barton vibes and I loved it! Told in multiple POV‘s we meet Clara, a young girl whose sister has gone missing, Liam a young man, recently divorced who is Clara‘s new neighbor and Elizabeth, the elderly lady who used to live in the house next to Clara‘s. Set in the 1970‘s this book captures the beauty of small town life, the complexities of adolescence and how the past is always present. 👇🏽

Cinfhen So grateful that @Barbarabb recently posted and reviewed this wonderful book😍I listened to the audio and the multicast narration is fantastic 🎧 1y
BarbaraBB I am glad you loved it as much as I did. I hadn't Lucy Barton vibes but loved all about it nevertheless. According to @TrishB and @Tamra you can't go wrong with Mary Lawson so I immediately purchased a copy of 1y
Cinfhen I read only one other by Lawson @BarbaraBB Crow Lake but I didn‘t love it as much as Solace! Your tagged book sounds good! I‘ll be curious to hear your thoughts 1y

AnneCecilie Olive Kitteridge has been sitting on my shelves for years. Seeing you compare Solice to Lucy Barton, reminds me that I need to read Olive first. 1y
Cinfhen @AnneCecilie I ADORED Olive!!! It‘s a FIVE STAR series for me!!!! They are all such incredible books!!!! 1y
Cathythoughts Lovely review 👍🏻♥️ I loved this book. 1y

I have been trying to get to this memoir ever since @Cinfhen put it in her #AuldLangSpines list. March Madness seems like the right time! Especially since all the teams from my ACC are out already so nothing needs my full attention.

Cinfhen Hope you enjoy Shoe Dog!! I actually cried over this one…I wasn‘t expecting that 😅 2y
Cinfhen Funny…I‘m about to start 2y
MallenNC I am liking it so far. I‘m still just getting started. I‘m glad we‘re both still reading from our lists! 2y
Megabooks KSU vs MSU was crazy!!! 🤯🤯 2y

I forgot to post my January #BookSpinBingo card! I got one bingo, finished 12 books including my BookSpin and DoubleSpin, and three #AuldLangSpines picks. Five were nonfiction. I haven‘t done reviews for all of these yet — maybe I‘ll get caught up soon.

Here‘s my final #AuldLangSpines report: I finished three books from my match with @Cinfhen and thought all three were great. I wasn‘t surprised by that since we had a very successful match last year! Two of these were nonfiction and the other a novel. I don‘t think I‘d have read any of these on my own. I am planning to keep Cindy‘s list close at hand so I can keep reading from it.

Thanks again to @monalyisha for coordinating this match!

Cinfhen So glad you enjoyed these 😁I plan on reading more from your list too 🤩and I‘m following your reviews from 2023 #sneakpeak 2y
Cinfhen Thanks @monalisa for all your extraordinary matchmaking skills 2y
MallenNC @Cinfhen I pay attention to your reviews too! And I‘ll read off your list next year even if we aren‘t matched. 2y

I read this pick from my #AuldLangSpines list from @Cinfhen and it was so good. It was well written and helped me learn about the healthcare workers who fought the virus so hard. The last chapter of this book, written before COVID-19, was pretty prescient about the pandemic to come. I‘m not sure if this Ebola outbreak was technically a pandemic or an epidemic but I‘m counting it for #Booked about a pandemic

Cinfhen Definitely counts as a pandemic 😷 I thought this was a terrific first hand account - some parts made me SO ANGRY 😡 2y
MallenNC @Cinfhen Yes! Especially the part where the Doctors Without Borders people were debating whether or not to use the drug on the doctor and they didn‘t. And I was sad for all the nurses. 2y
Cinfhen OMG! I was SO FURIOUS over that too!!! I didn‘t feel their rationale made any sense. It was so heartless 2y

MallenNC @Cinfhen I didn‘t understand it either. They seemed to weigh the pros and cons but then they just never decided and didn‘t even tell him to give him a chance to have an opinion. Awful. 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen @MallenNC yes, I felt the ethics of DWB was quite questionable in that instance! 2y
MallenNC @Megabooks Definitely questionable. It made the organization seem more focused on their reputation than medical care. 2y

One's Company: A Novel | Ashley Hutson

Pickpick

What would you do if you won the lottery? Probably not what the MC of this novel did, which was recreating her own world modeled after the TV show Three‘s Company. (Jack‘s face in the photo above would probably be his reaction to this idea). It‘s is a pretty dark book about dealing with trauma but I loved it. Unique story with a lot of good details. I stayed up late to finish. This is another win from the #AuldLangSpines list I got from @Cinfhen

Cinfhen I‘m sooooo happy you liked this one because it‘s definitely NOT for everyone!!!!! So unique 🫶🏼 2y
MallenNC @Cinfhen It did take a little ways in for me to really be invested. But I especially liked it once she got her world built, and then the ending. It really is clever. 2y
Cinfhen I wonder if the whole thing with the woman playing Mrs. Roper was only in her imagination. She had so many layers of delusions & made me wonder what was real. Like did she only imagine replicating the whole setup ? It‘s the kind of bonkers I love 2y
MallenNC @Cinfhen I wasn‘t sure if she was real either. Especially since there was no reference to her in the third section after the fire. A LOT was happening. 2y
Christine I love this review! I‘ve been meaning to pick this one up for a while and am now even more eager to do so. 🙂 2y

This was such as fascinating memoir. Chrysta Bilton has anything but a normal family in many ways but she tells the story of her mother and her donor father with a lot of compassion. Her mother is really the star of this book. This was a good follow up having read The Lost Family, about ancestry databases, a couple of years ago.

This was my first book from the #AuldLangSpines list I got from @Cinfhen and it was a winner!

Cinfhen Agreed, her mom was such a fascinating character. Glad this was a pick. I‘ve just started my third book from your list and I‘m really enjoying 2y
monalyisha If I were going to read one or the other (this or Lost Family), which would be your pick? 2y
MallenNC @monalyisha It depends on what you‘re looking for. This one is more of a memoir of an interesting family unit and Lost Family is about the repercussions of DNA testing. @Megabooks and @Cinfhen which would you pick? 2y
See All 8 Comments
Cinfhen I found this one more compelling @monalyisha less scientific, but both are good. 2y
Megabooks @monalyisha I liked both but prefer lost family just because it‘s more science-y. It just depends on what you‘re in the mood for - narrative nonfiction or memoir. 🤔 2y
monalyisha Sounds like this might be the one for me! Thanks! 2y
MallenNC @monalyisha It‘s fairly short — just 9 hours or so on audio. I hope you enjoy it. 2y
MallenNC @Megabooks Thanks for weighing in. I knew you had read both and I listened to The Lost Family after you reviewed it. 2y

Happy New Year‘s Eve! Posting my first #BookSpin list for next year. The first five are #AuldLangSpines picks from @Cinfhen that were available now from my library. I expect my holds to come in soon. Looking forward to another good reading start for 2023.

Cinfhen I‘m excited for the ones you have lined up!!! I‘m curious about #19 and I‘ve read a bunch on your list - all were good!!! I‘m digging into your list this week- my first two are 2y

I‘m so excited to explore this list from @Cinfhen again this year. We were well-paired last year because several of her picks ended up on my 2022 list. I‘ve read 2,6, 7, and 12 already but there‘s a lot for me to choose from for January. I‘m not sure where to start, but I‘m sure it will be good. #AuldLangSpines

Cinfhen Yay!! You know I love audio, so I‘d say if you can find the audio I‘d opt for that option unless you prefer print! A few I selected are very off beat so I won‘t be “insulted” if you bail or don‘t like them. I hope you find one or two that will make your list next year 💗 2y
Chelsea.Poole Great list @Cinfhen! — I spy a few that made my list here 👀 @MallenNC and how neat-o you two were matched two years in a row! 😊 (edited) 2y
