I think this book is a great example of why own voices are so important. There is such an authenticity in the author‘s writing and even while tackling so many topics, it never felt overdone or too much. I loved following Layla on her journey as a Black choreographer and thirty-something woman.

Medusa has had many roles in many stories. Daughter, sister, mortal, priestess, victim, monster. Here‘s a story that incorporates many aspects of her past to make something new.

A fascinating retelling of Medusa. This Medusa is much younger than other retellings, & that influences a lot. Medusa‘s characterization is deep, but everyone else‘s is shallow. The pacing kept me tense the whole time, & the ending left me feeling a bit sad.🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

4.5⭐️

While this is the first book I have read in the Rev. Clare Ferguson/Russ Van Alstyne mystery series, I wasn't lost. I was lucky enough to get to read this early through Netgalley. I can tell you that even though this was the 10th book in the series, they don't have to be read in order.

Spencer-Fleming storytelling level is great. I was captivate at the first chapter. It's full of suspense and thrills. I felt like I knew who the ⬇️

MonicaLoves2Read characters were by the end of the book. I think the subject matter is very present with all the hate that is going on in America, as well. I now need to go back and read the others in this series🤪

The adventures continue as the whole gang travel to India to meet Connie‘s family & find an artifact of immense destructive power before the Order.

Such a fun series! Love the relationships between all the characters (although 1 particular aspect felt rushed), loved the spotlight on Connie‘s family & the plight of India under British rule. & really enjoying the depth given to 1 of the villains, making for a really interesting conflict. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

julesG I hope that villain gets more spotlight and/or his own novella/spin-off. 5d
julesG I also enjoyed seeing more of Neil and Connie, but their relationship felt a bit rushed. 5d

BookmarkTavern @julesG Oh yes! Something like a short prequel showing how he got to where he is at the beginning of the first book. 5d
BookmarkTavern @julesG Yes! And how the ending seemed to be saying, oh I‘ve actually loved you the whole time?! Your POVs certainly didn‘t set that up particularly well! 😂 5d
julesG Right?! In both cases. 5d
julesG I have to say I liked bumbling Neil more in this one. In the second book he had 'John Hannah in The Mummy' vibes, but the character grew out of this in Arrow of Fortune. 5d
BookmarkTavern @julesG Yes. He was still clumsy, but he had such depth in this one. His worry about how Ellie and everyone might see him differently, his acceptance of Ellie and Adam‘s relationship was all great. 5d

Six down on their luck mystery adjacent people are invited to the small village of Midwinter to compete in a fictional murder mystery game organised by the Midwinter Trust. Then two actual murders happen.

I read an excerpt late last year which made this sound like a locked room murder mystery homage to the Golden Age Mysteries where the reader is encouraged to guess the clues together with the amateur sleuths.

julesG The novel was a slog through a lot of repetitive backstory with characters that aren't developed much past their cliché descriptions "failed author," "literary agent involved in scandal," "token American barkeep". The clues weren't very difficult to work out and there is a handy solutions guide at the back.

The final nail in the coffin was the deus ex machina twist to make the ending seem plausible. ??

Ruthiella Sorry this wasn‘t a winner. But it‘s at least of the TBR now. 7d
julesG @Ruthiella Yepp! One less book on the list. 😁 7d
RaeLovesToRead Darn it. This is on my pile :/ 6d
julesG @RaeLovesToRead Sorry. Maybe you like it more than I did. You know I'm not a fan of epic/drawn out backstory/world-building, maybe that's why I didn't enjoy the novel more. 6d
RaeLovesToRead Haha. I'm not getting epic from the cover... but I'll be giving it a go! 6d

Nix has left her past in the past and moved on with her life in the military, or so she thought. Then Kessandra, her former lover and the people's favourite 'royal', hires Nix as her bodyguard on a covert operation. On the way to the mission, on board a Titanic-like submersible, Kess briefs Nix about what is really at stake; and not a minute too soon,... ⬇️

julesG as the sickness that's turning people into violent killers is spreading among the passengers and crew.

I liked the world-building, the intricately described submersible, but also the background information on the political situation and what kinds of conflicts are brewing within the country and outside of it.

Feeling stuck? Then you might find yourself stumbling down Gloaming Lane to find the Amberglow Candy Store w/ magical delights that will shake up your life.

Delightful! Such sympathetic characters, & the candies & how they influenced lives were so unique & interesting. & I really liked the dive into the backstory of the mysterious shop owner. Made me immediately crave something sweet, though. Would happily read several sequels!🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

Compared to the first book in the Bristol Keats duology, this was a slow read. The main plot had so many points of view that it felt like it was moving at a snail's pace. In addition, the romance plot leaned very heavily into the miscommunication trope. In the final 20%, though, all the action happened.

⬇️

julesG The last two chapters and the epilogue OF THE ARC -the ending of the published book might be different- didn't make sense in regard to how the time went by in Elphame and the real world. It's mentioned several times throughout both books that a few weeks in Elphame can equal years in the real world, but suddenly both 'realms' run on the same time? 2w
