Mark Galeotti provides a detailed analysis of the combat in the Panshir valley during the Soviet Afghan war, offering insight into the Soviet 40th army and the Mujahideen fighters, accurately portraying the events leading up to and following the campaign. This work is recommended for Cold War enthusiasts, military history enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the history of Afghanistan.

There were some slow parts, but it was still a good book about a girl living through the Taliban takeover.

Another wonderful op shop find. Written in 1986 after a visit to Pakistan and the Afghan refugee camps there. It was when the Russians were invading Afghanistan. I learnt a lot . Not only about the history but about the author. Before the invasion Afghanistan was on its way to becoming a modern country with a bright future where girls were educated, the various groups got along and the countryside was not the desert it became with the invasion. 👇

Jeg Really nothing has changed for the Afghanis, in fact it is probably far worse. A very interesting read for me. Hope more of her books pop up. She was a woman before her time really. Very much a humanitarian. 7mo

I'm at the part where Laila marries Rasheed. I knew something wasn't right when Rasheed was being nice. I knew he hadn't changed, but it still shocked me when Mariam confronted him. I hate him. Both him and Jalil.

What happened to Babi and Tariq is really sad. I had to stop reading.

TrishB It‘s a very sad book. Ugly crying one 😢 9mo

These past 2 days i have been in the mood to just read and it feels great. Reading for hours and into the night is soothing my tired body and soul right now to the point where i am very antisocial at the moment 😆

A deeply moving story of endurance. I couldn‘t put it down. An uncomfortable and heart-breaking read that is a reminder of how strong love can be.
I read this as a love story. A love between separated childhood sweethearts; a love between two unlikely friends; and the love of a homeland. A Thousand Splendid Suns is powerful prose.

What a grest book! It was heartbreaking and made me so so thankful for being able to grow up and live in a safe country with basic human (female) rights 🙏🏼 the story follows two woman through their hardships, forced marriages, brutality, loss of rights and wars. 5/5⭐️

Gissy I thought the same when I read this book. So much to do though. Heartbreaking novel 💔 13mo
