Another wonderful op shop find. Written in 1986 after a visit to Pakistan and the Afghan refugee camps there. It was when the Russians were invading Afghanistan. I learnt a lot . Not only about the history but about the author. Before the invasion Afghanistan was on its way to becoming a modern country with a bright future where girls were educated, the various groups got along and the countryside was not the desert it became with the invasion. 👇

Jeg Really nothing has changed for the Afghanis, in fact it is probably far worse. A very interesting read for me. Hope more of her books pop up. She was a woman before her time really. Very much a humanitarian. 3mo

These past 2 days i have been in the mood to just read and it feels great. Reading for hours and into the night is soothing my tired body and soul right now to the point where i am very antisocial at the moment 😆

Re-reading this series I read when I was younger.. such a heart wrenching story through so many hardships, but definitely a good read!

Interesting story of a family in Kabul. I was especially intrigued by the different layers of the family. It was interesting to see a more personal look into daily life in Afghanistan. The book came out in 2002 so it is fairly old now, but I doubt life has changed a whole lot there.

I've read many books focusing and educating us (quite rightly) on the traumas, restrictions and hostilities towards females under the Taliban rule. But what if you are an educated man that wants to hear his wife's laughter? Would love to walk beside her on the streets? Wants to see her face under the glow of the sun?

Here we see two marriages trying to hold onto humanity in a place where pleasure is a sin.

This book packs a punch.
