pickAnother wonderful op shop find. Written in 1986 after a visit to Pakistan and the Afghan refugee camps there. It was when the Russians were invading Afghanistan. I learnt a lot . Not only about the history but about the author. Before the invasion Afghanistan was on its way to becoming a modern country with a bright future where girls were educated, the various groups got along and the countryside was not the desert it became with the invasion. 👇
I'm at the part where Laila marries Rasheed. I knew something wasn't right when Rasheed was being nice. I knew he hadn't changed, but it still shocked me when Mariam confronted him. I hate him. Both him and Jalil.
What happened to Babi and Tariq is really sad. I had to stop reading.
