Plain Bad Heroines | Emily Danforth

I‘m 175 pgs into this book.... and I find I‘m still having the hardest time getting *into* it... it‘s not bad... it seems well *written*... but perhaps not really well-told? So far, I‘m sticking it out... but it‘s taking me so long I feel like I‘m just losing valuable reading time...

Maybe it‘s my focus? Anyone else try this one yet? (It‘s not yet published — so early reviewer/advanced reviewer copy..)

MicheleinPhilly That‘s unfortunate as I really LOVED 4y
Branwen Oh nooooo! 😟 I hope it picks up for you! This is one of my most anticipated October reads! 4y
Avanders @MicheleinPhilly @Branwen I‘ve heard such good things about the author! But honestly, I‘d take my response with a grain of salt... my reading is all over the place and very taxed this year 😳 I‘ll be sure to update on how I feel about it once I make some more progress... i‘m not even at that magical halfway point yet 😁😁 4y

MicheleinPhilly Oh I get it. My reading this year has been a MESS. Hope it picks up for you! 4y
MaleficentBookDragon I'm looking forward to this one. Stacked!
BTW, did you get the kindle cozy mystery I sent you?
4y
ferskner I just finished it and really enjoyed it! But it's definitely not light reading. I think if you have a lot on your mind, it might not be the best choice. 4y

Amazing start to a new series. Character driven with enough action to keep you hooked.

Just hitting shelves today, you should give it a try if you enjoy mysteries soaked in the supernatural.

Novella break! Another fantastic read from Zen Cho. I was hooked from the first page and didn‘t want to put it down until the last. Well-paced with great characters whose different histories lead to conflicting worldviews - and ultimately believable connection. #AdvancedReaderCopy

Automatic Reload: A Novel | Ferrett Steinmetz

This ARC is being mismarketed and will land badly with those expecting a “rom com,” jesus.
Contains potential triggers for sexual assault.
We don‘t meet the female lead for the first 80 pages. When we do, it‘s as she‘s screaming herself awake from non consensual body modification in a traumatic scene - one where the hero still has time to compare her new body to a Barbie. While she‘s strapped to a table naked.

akaGingerK And after the book establishes liking classic movies as the male leads‘ primary non-combat character trait - which in this world is quirky and weird! - the woman reveals she‘s ALSO into classic films. So instead of being enthused, he starts with Fake Geek Girl style quizzing. A charming character trait that has never led to me not dating a guy in RL, surely. 5y

The pitfalls of ARCs: this book was so good, such a great read, and /it‘s/ not even out yet- much less the sequels that I have an immediate need for. Aaaaargh. Anyway, if you‘d like a scifi adventure featuring a hotshot pilot and secret royal navigating deadly political intrigue, blood-obsessed empires, and a lovely, complicated roommates-to-more relationship, then here‘s your April read.

Yep, I just passed the ARC to someone else at the store, but I‘m definitely picking up my own copy when it pubs. And giving one to my cousin the environ educator. Tackles what our consumption and waste levels in the US are doing to the planet - but provides hope and a starting point*, too.

akaGingerK *There‘s an emphasis on individual consumer choice to address systemic problems. The author also seems sure that little actions will snowball into activism, while I feel like a lot of people‘s activism stops at “I recycle!” But given how easily climate news can be paralyzingly overwhelming, I appreciate the just do SOMETHING approach. 5y

Beheld | TaraShea Nesbit

Mehso-so

Starting off the year with an “eh.” The murder was not really as large a part of the story as the galley copy led me to believe. Beheld is more a fictionalized entry into lesser known colonists in Plymouth - the women and the indentured servants- than mystery or crime novel. I‘d probably have liked it better with different expectations- it‘s a quiet, very interior book.

Royal Holiday | Jasmine Guillory

What a lovely break from all the rest of December! Guillory writes some of my favorite romances. Vivian is wonderful, and Malcolm a good match for her. Escapist fun.

#AdvancedReaderCopy which I utterly failed to advanced-read.
