The Baker Street Letters | Michael Robertson
post image
Mehso-so

What happens when your place of business coincides with the infamous Sherlock Holmes Baker Street address? It could lead to a mystery!

There were parts I liked & others that fell flat. From the first page, it felt like I was reading not the first in the series…it was almost like the reader was dropped in the middle of the story with facts about the characters left out. Some are slowly revealed, but it left me feeling meh overall. #192025 #2009

Ella‘s been a SAHM most of her married life, but now the kids are old so she has gotten a job as a reader for a literary agent. The first script is Sweet Blasphemy. A book about Rumi and his spiritual companion Shams of Tabriz. Shams is a traveling dervish, and he has 40 rules for life and love, and he follows a philosophy on unity of people and religion. Not everyone agrees with this

AnneCecilie I‘ve read a couple of Shafak‘s latest novels, but haven‘t loved them as much as everybody else. Maybe my expectations where too high after hearing how great they were? This one on the other hand, I didn‘t know much about and was completely swept up in the story. 5mo
Librarybelle I like the cover of that edition! 5mo

Dark Places: A Novel | Gillian Flynn

Sent to me by a fellow #BookCrossing member, this thriller follows the investigations of a woman who tries to figure out what happened the night her mother and sisters were murdered by her brother. It was a very disturbing novel to read but at the same time, I had a hard time putting it down!

Librarybelle Hard to put down - a hall mark of a good book! I‘m not sure if I am brave enough to read any of Flynn‘s books! 2y

14 Cows for America | Carmen Agra Deedy

Trying to catch up on some reviews. I read this a few weeks ago for #foodandlit #kenya. Recommended by @TheBookHippie , it is a heartwarming, true story of a Masai village who bestows a gift of fourteen cows to the American people, grieving the September 11 attacks. Beautiful illustrations. It is a children‘s picture book, but this adult found it very moving.
“To the Masai, the cow is life.” #readingafrica #kenya

Catsandbooks Fantastic! 🇰🇪 2y
DivineDiana @thebookhippie And I never would have found it without you! I returned it to the Library yesterday, and shared it with a Librarian who had not heard of it. As it turned out, she had worked in Kenya while in college and had visited a Masai village. She immediately checked it out! She plans to share with her sisters this weekend who also visited Kenya! Thank you so much! ❤️ 2y

Daisy Dalrymple stumbles into yet another murder (she could probably give Jessica Fletcher a run for her money…maybe someone not to invite to a dinner party, should you not wish someone on your guest list to be found murdered). I enjoyed this one more than the last one - murder in a Grotto with rich suspects and lots of secrets. Fun mystery that works well on audio. #19822022 #2009

Maria514626 Thanks for the recommendation! I‘ve been looking for a good, light audio read. 🎉 2y

Librarybelle @DaveGreen7777 It‘s so true! 😂 Poor Daisy…anywhere she goes murder follows… 2y

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind | William Kamkwamba, Bryan Mealer

This is the impressive and admirable story of a boy in #Malawi who, despite famine, hunger and a lack of education manages to invent windmills and electricity for his village. When he has been “discovered” by the world and becomes a protégé of international sponsors it is touching to see how he learns about the internet and elevators and all those things he grew up without.

Suet624 I remember reading a children‘s book to my grandson about him. 3y
BennettBookworm I was fortunate enough to hear Kamkwamba speak in person! I love this book and the children‘s book, as well! 3y

BarbaraBB @BennettBookworm That is awesome, he seems such a kind boy. I read a young readers edition (accidentally) but I don‘t think this is a children‘s book. The parts about physics were still hard for me 😊 3y
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain The first months are always the easiest- as you know 😉😘 3y
Librarybelle That photo! ❤️❤️❤️ 3y
Cinfhen Stunning photo and great use of challenge prompts!! I have this one for #Malawi too (edited) 3y
bibliothecarivs Was pleased to meet Kamkwambe a few years ago when he spoke at our local university. 3y
BarbaraBB @bibliothecarivs I can imagine, he seems like a real kind and intelligent man. 3y
