I just spent a month at Manderley…

This is a reread for me, and while I did not remember every twist and turn, I do remember the creepy vibes from this. It‘s a level of creepiness that slowly enfolds the reader and can make one shiver. That Mrs. Danvers…oh my! I loved it and am glad it was a #PemberLittens #HashtagBrigade read! #192025 #1938 #52BookClub24 #AnAbruptEnding

BarkingMadRead It was really creepy, esp Danvers! I don‘t remember that really bad scene from the first time! You‘d think it would stick, but it didn‘t 🤣 7mo
TheAromaofBooks Same!! It was a reread for me as well, but I was surprised at some of the scenes/details I'd forgotten. 7mo
Librarybelle @BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks I know! Maybe it was Manderley‘s spell…we just could not remember all of the bad. 😂 7mo

A short novella in epistolary form. It's crazy that this was written in the 1930s without hindsight of what actually did transpire. Within this short book, it encapsulates the mood of the time.

On his first night in Jerusalem, Poirot overhears a man telling someone that she has to be killed. Then Poirot travels to Petra along with several others, among them the Boynton family. While there, Mrs Boynton is found dead and Poirot decides to find out if it was murder and if so, who did it?

Once again, Christie had me fooled, because I didn‘t see that ending coming. Even if I have seen the TV dramatization

Hugh Fraser is an amazing narrator

Librarybelle Wonderful! This is one I have yet to read by Christie! 13mo

This was a charming story about a woman's attempts to help her friend get reintegrated into society after a breakup and reconciliation. I was uncomfortable with some of the attitudes toward women but had to remind myself that this book was written in 1938. I especially liked the main character and the humour.

Ruthiella I agree. It‘s a novel “of its time”, but I liked it in spite of those aspects. 1y

I finished reading this one this morning. I prefer John Steinbeck's novels, but this collection of short stories and the novella The Red Pony was good. I love John Steinbeck's writing style, and this one did not disappoint. #ReadingThroughTheYears192021 #1938

Howard_L I love Steinbeck‘s writing style as well. Haven‘t read this but will add it to my list. I have a tattered copy of “The Acts of King Arthur and his Noble Knights” in the TBR stack on my bed shelf. 5y
ljuliel I haven‘t heard of this before ! 5y

A fun romp and great palate cleanser after the more serious and complex stuff I‘ve been reading lately. If it didn‘t have the Italian slurs it would be a perfect romp. #1001books #1938 #englishlit #tbrtakedown
