The Crime At Black Dudley | Margery Allingham

Another book finished for #Scarathlon2022! This is the first book of the Campion series and is not as good as some of the later ones, but it's still an enjoyable English country-house mystery. It surprised me that Campion is not the main character in this novel.

David Golder is always looking for a way to make more money and nothing is ever enough. Neither for him, nor his wife and daughter.

A book about greed and love.

This was Nemirovsky‘s debut novel and was first published in #1929

Was looking forward to pick this up as I had heard about it about 2 years ago. A short classic that is worth the read to understand the push and pull of passing as white.

I can't even put into words how I feel about this essay, but Virginia Woolf makes so many very valid points about the lack of representation of women in literature through the ages.

Emilymdxn Fabulous review #teamtellhemingwaytofuckoff do you like Clarice Lispector? She's been redeeming modernism from men like Hemingway for me recently! 6y
DarcysMom @Emilymdxn I have not read any Clarice Lispector. I will have to check her out. Love the hashtag! I am definitely a member of #teamtellhemingwaytofuckoff! 6y

Set in the 20‘s when the races began mixing a bit more publicly, Passing follows the lives, social perils, & personal risks faced by those passing as white. It didn‘t end at all the way I anticipated, but the views & overlaps of the various characters were very well done & the views of those living as white, verses those who passed on occasion, & those living their ‘birth race‘ lives were very well defined & the dangers of crossing paths explored.

JanJan I read a book by Nella Larsen in college and always wanted to read more. This is now on my list! 7y

A short novel that looks at a woman who crossed the color line in 1920s New York/Chicago--what it meant for herself and her long-lost friends, left wondering what happened to her.
