The actual events of the book, swimming out to a sunken minesweeper, stealing a medal from a visiting soldier, taking communion, are not as central to the book as the potent tension held in the writing between everyday normal boyish emotions and the dark shadows of a devastating war. Excellent book for my October travel to Germany 🇩🇪
