This book was recommended to me from one of my students, who is Irish. Nory is a girl who lives in Ireland as the potato famine appears to begin. She watches as her younger brother gets thinner, grandfather has to work… 3-7th grade read. It is rare to come across a book that takes you through the potato famine. This historical fiction was not really educational, but to get a student interested. It didn‘t stay with anything enough to really learn

Review: Nory Ryan's Song by Patricia Reilly Giff, 2002, is a historical fiction book about a young girl trying to make it through the Great Potato Famine in Ireland.
Blurb: This is a good example of the genre because although the characters are fictional it is based upon a real event and the author was well educated on the topic and history of it. The authors note at the end gives even more information.

Nory Ryan‘s Song would be a nice book to have on the shelf in the classroom. I think it gives children an idea of how life was in the past and how it has changed overtime. I believe it also shows a lesson of hard work.

Nory Ryan‘s Song by Patricia Reilly Giff published in 2000 is a good historical fiction novel. It is set in the mid 1800‘s with Nory and her family. It shows the hardships and determination of their everyday lives.

2000, historical fiction. Story takes place in 1845 with Nory Ryan‘s family who lives on the west coast of ireland. Every year they plant potatoes and sail a fishing boat to earn rent money for the Lord. Many people leave the bay despite their family living there for generations. A blight attacks the potatoes meaning no crop which means starvation.

“Strangers had come to the sea and taken everything, and now even they were gone.”

This is a story about pushing through troubling times in order to survive. It is a story of family and love.

This historical fiction story takes place in 1845 in Europe. Nory Ryan‘s family lives on the west coast of Ireland for generations. Every year the family carries out the same traditions. However life there can be hard. When the family is faced with no crops and starvation, Nory must summon the courage and ingenuity to find food and hope.

This shows a story about something that children‘s literature doesn‘t describe. The potato famine isn‘t super popular with children, and this introduces the topic in an interesting and personal way.

This book has a great use of language and tells a unique story. The characters are in depth and it shows real problems.

This is a super cool feature for the book! It really shows the authenticity of the language in Ireland and helps the reader to understand the dialect and slang!

Published in 2000, this historical fiction book takes place in 1845 in Ireland and provides authentic language and details of the country and time period. It tells the story of struggle and magic through song while a family works to survive the famine. This story also shows Nory working to save it all on his own when his father does not return from his trip.

The first book I thought of immediately for today‘s #LiteraryLuck prompt was this #MGFiction about The Great Hunger in #Ireland. So well done. I really enjoy Patricia Reilly Giff.

May 11-musical titles

The Great Hunger is a tough subject for a children's novel to cover. While the story did not delve into some of the darker aspects of this event, I felt that it did a decent job of introducing children to a difficult part of history. I felt that the book could've been longer to give more time for character development. I always like to read novels or poems about #Irish characters or written by Irish authors around St. Patrick's Day. I haven't read this one yet, so I thought it was a good candidate for this year's Irish read. #Ireland
