Received historical wisdom casts abolitionists as bourgeois, mostly white reformers burdened by racial paternalism and economic conservatism. Manisha Sinha overturns this image, broadening her scope beyond the antebellum period usually associated with abolitionism and recasting it as a radical social movement in which men and women, black and white, free and enslaved found common ground in causes ranging from feminism and utopian socialism to anti-imperialism and efforts to defend the rights of labor. Drawing on extensive archival research, including newly discovered letters and pamphlets, Sinha documents the influence of the Haitian Revolution and the centrality of slave resistance in shaping the ideology and tactics of abolition. This book is a comprehensive new history of the abolition movement in a transnational context. It illustrates how the abolitionist vision ultimately linked the slaves cause to the struggle to redefine American democracy and human rights across the globe.

Bart can't believe his mama finished this book finally! The research here is phenomenal, but this is a clinical, dry reading experience. I took months to read it, and it just tired me out. I'm happy to be moving on to some lighter reading.
Why I read it: NBA nonfiction longlist.

Hey Littens! The past two months have been... Weird. I got really depressed, stopped seeing the guy I had been dating for some time, developed an awful case of insomnia, and maybe went on a first date last night? And this book, while interesting, has felt like a weight. The plan tonight is to power through it, hard, and start a fresh slate with some fast fiction next week.

Reggie I don't really know you but I think about you alot. I read Claire North's The End of Days and it depressed the fck out of me because it deals with alot of what you post about, the world injustice. And sometimes its heavier than it lets on. And it gets inside of you and overtakes you. So just know you're thought of and take a step back and know that life is still there to be enjoyed. Have a good night!!!!🙂 8y

I feel a pit, not just a rabbit hole, opening before me as I start to read The Slave's Cause. This book is so richly written-it's going to take awhile. I've only read the introduction, but the author's thesis is so important and relevant to what's continuing to go on in this country today. I'm contemplating reading it with This Vast Southern Empire, as I think they will go hand-in-hand. Excuse my mess while my brain explodes😳

One of the non-fiction titles to make the 2016 National Book Awards longlist. I want to do a self-study of the abolitionist movement from social/political and literary viewpoints, and this book looks like a good place to start.
