Show Your Work!
Show Your Work!: 10 Ways to Share Your Creativity and Get Discovered | Austin Kleon
In his New York Times bestseller Steal Like an Artist, Austin Kleon showed readers how to unlock their creativity by stealing from the community of other movers and shakers. Now, in an even more forward-thinking and necessary book, he shows how to take that critical next step on a creative journeygetting known.Show Your Work! is about why generosity trumps genius. It's about getting findable, about using the network instead of wasting time networking. It's not self-promotion, it's self-discoverylet others into your process, then let them steal from you. Filled with illustrations, quotes, stories, and examples,Show Your Work! offers ten transformative rules for being open, generous, brave, productive. In chapters such as You Don't Have to Be a Genius; Share Something Small Every Day; andStick Around, Kleon creates a user's manual for embracing the communal nature of creativity what he calls the ecology of talent. From broader life lessons about work (you can't find your voice if you don't use it) to the etiquette of sharingand the dangers of oversharingto the practicalities of Internet life (build a good domain name; give credit when credit is due), it's an inspiring manifesto for succeeding as any kind of artist or entrepreneur in the digital age.

I enjoyed this book, quick read. Some online advice for getting your work seen. I think getting it out of your library first is a good idea bc there‘s a lot of pages with one sentence on it. I do that all the time and I just take a few notes on the advice, as written in my journal here. #librariesrock

I first learned about Austin Kleon from Amy Stewart. She heard him speak at some sort of book fair and I was intrigued by her description of him. I‘ve been following him on Instagram ever since then. He‘s so freakin‘ smart, down to earth, wise, and practical. I loved Steal Like an Artist and now I finally read Show Your Work. A lot of it is about how to talk about your work, connect with others, and be a good social media citizen.

This book is written similarly to the first one. There are a lot of quotes. I didn't find it to be as inspiring, and there wasn't anything profound in the way he suggests getting discovered. Basically, work non-stop and share everything. There were some practical tips - share online, find a domain name, send a newsletter. There were also some tips that didn't appeal to me, namely finding a “scenius“ and reading the obituaries every morning.

NikkiM5 Reading the obituaries every morning sounds stressful 😣 3y
Shae_Purcell @NikkiM5 I can only imagine the funk I would be in for the rest of the day. No thank you! 😬 3y

“You find time the same place you find spare change: in the nooks and crannies. You find it in the cracks between the big stuff—your commute, your lunch break, the few hours after your kids go to bed.“

Earlier in this section, Kleon says we all get 24 hours a day. Basically, no excuses. I don't buy into that. We're all living in different situations under different circumstances. I do like the idea of “finding“ time in the little nooks of life.

“Social media sites are the perfect place to share daily updates.“

This book was originally published in 2014. The author gives this list of the preferred social media sites for different groups. Agree? Disagree? What's missing seven years later? I would add TikTok for visual artists. LinkedIn for business people stills stands. 😀

Filmmakers: Youtube, Vimeo
Business people: LinkedIn
Writers: Twitter
Visual Artists: Tumblr, Instagram, Facebook

Shae_Purcell @BookBosomed1 Oh yes, all good ones. I especially love Patreon. It's such a great platform for learning while also giving you the opportunity to support an artist's work. 3y

The author says that if your work isn't online then it doesn't exist. I'll admit, that stings a little. It makes me feel a bit defensive even. I'm on most social media sites, like most people, and I've shared bits and pieces here and there. Granted, I've dabbled in all sorts of ventures and nothing's really stuck. Maybe that's the problem. If the only way to be seen and heard is online, specifically via social media, I really should figure it out.

I'm a fan! Like the two of his others I've read, I tagged this to bits. 💙 If nothing else, he's got a great attitude, and he's always readable.

rather_be_reading i like his others too! 5y

Cool, more books for my TBR pile 🥴 This book wasn‘t AMAZING or anything, but it did inspire me to buy a domain name so it was definitely an influential read 4 me! Get this if you‘re a blogger or Tweeter.

I debated between four and five stars for this, but really, there were enough things that were such powerful reminders that I wrote them down that I feel like it deserves five. When I wrote down about the fifth thing, especially considering how short this book is, I figured if a book has so much that I want to remember, it is worth a full five star recommendation.

A book that provides inspiration and encouragement to artists by teaching them self promotion. It is not just for your work to have more exposure, but also, for self improvement as well. The book is smart and witty in it's writing and guides it's readers to a creative journey to be more established.

I‘m not really at a place where I can do much with the advice in this book, but I loved Steal Like An Artist so much that I needed to see what other tidbits of wisdom Kleon had to share.

Like his other book, this one was inspiring and motivating, with bite-sized words of advice & strategies. Some of the points were a repeat from the last book, but most of it was new stuff. Time to get drawing! #getfitchallenge

As you work on things, share your process and what influences or excites you. Open your ‘cabinet of curiosities‘ and show people what you found. But always credit the original creators! Not only does it help people find new and wonderful things, it keeps the creative community strong.

I'm not sure there's anything particularly revelatory here, but it's a good desk reference for the perpetually scared-to-share and it was quite affirming to read someone putting to paper a lot of the same conclusions I've been struggling to come to for a while myself.

Interesting, but nothing groundbreaking. Props for referencing Kanye and Dan Harmon, I guess.

BookishClaire Oh I really liked this but you're right - not much that is groundbreaking. More a beginning of the year kick in the bum to get going for me 😀 9y
Betch Don't get me wrong, I thought it was interesting. Maybe I set my expectations too high for this one. I read this early in the year and you're right, it's pretty good motivation! (Also hi, I followed you from The List App 😉) 9y
