This book is an amazing mixture of self reflection as well as a view into how the bonds of combat soldiers are formed to become something truly unique. From the very begining you are on the journey as the main character transitions from civilian to soldier. The story is a gripping tale of the highs and lows of war, the forming of a new found family, and the imprint war makes on a person. Very well written from begining to end!

I teach this each year in my regular junior English class. I had never read it until I started at my current school, but I've always loved Walter Dean Myers. We have a local Vietnam pilot veteran come in to speak to the kids about his experiences and it is the biggest hit of the year.
