My first completed book for the challenge! I was able to also get it in audio which helped. A low pick, just because this is the kind of nonfiction I find boring and would prefer in long form journalism, rather than a padded out book. But all the stars to Captain Sullenberger and the United Airlines crew. Their professionalism makes me feel more even confident about flying, for sure..

This is a non fiction memoir about the flight that landed in the Hudson. I didnt know ANYTHING about flight 1549 so I was really engrossed. This is extremely readable, informative and I felt inspired reading it. There's some shocking information here regarding the pilots taking their own lunches, not being paid for delayed take offs even though its outside their control. The slice of a pilots life view really opened my eyes to the industry.

Took a long time to build up to the actual main flight story - but that part was captivating. Clever how Sully reflected on how Sully‘s life experiences prepared him for the incident but it was a bit long. Still worth a read - or listen in my case!

“People had been losing their jobs [and homes and savings] in large numbers. A lot of people felt like they had been hit by a double bird strike in their own lives. But Flight 1549 had shown people that there are always further actions you can take. There are ways out of the tightest spots. We as individuals, and as a society, can find them.”

I'm not a big Nonfiction reader. I'd rather escape into Fiction. I think the problem with Biographies like this is it's One moment of Excitement and a lifetime of Ordinary. It's hard to make everyday life an interesting read. Not a bad book. Story could have been told in half as many pages. Glad it was a borrow not buy. #booksandbrewsclub 🍻

Erofan What do you think about the movie? I loved it, Tom Hanks is amazing! 5y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @Erofan I haven't seen it. I love everything Tom Hanks does so I will probably like it. 5y

Day 6 of #tarottakeover I pick Highest Duty for the Chariot card. I think that this book represents everything that this card signifies. I think that the actions of Captain Sully that day were beyond courageous and that his self confidence and discipline served him well.

I remember watching the events unfold on tv & recently have become obsessed with the movie Sully. Reading this book gave me so many feelings! I loved the way he wrote the details & how he felt as he LIVED through the events of that day & after. The only thing I didn't like was that the timeline jumped a bit, he went from talking about that day to talking about his childhood, then a few chapters later went back to the original thought. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️\u005

I looove when books have pictures or illustrations. I guess I never really got over picture books from when I was little, but they really do help bring a story to life. 📸

This is probably the most destroyed book I have. I bought it from Thrift books and someone had stuck a sticker right on the title 😣 Anyway, the story is great & I'm learning a lot about flying, which I've always had a huge interest in. ✈

[DELETED] 69569662 Haven't read Sully, but this one from the 60s is the best book on flying: accordingly to a Pilot friend. I loved it. If into flying might check it out 7y
Rachel.Rencher @TotalPisces Thanks for the recommendation! I've been obsessed with flying since I was a toddler, so I'm sure I'll love it 👍 7y

The sections about the flight and Hudson landing of flight 1549 are riveting, but much of the first 2/3 of this book drag and are redundant. I was interested to learn that he had done some research into crashes and their causes during his career before this flight. I'll always have nothing but respect for this man, but I had hoped for more from (most) of this book.

Karen3 I felt the same way. Did not care for the majority of the book. The movie was MUCH better. One of the few times I have ever said that. 8y
Hooked_on_books @Karen3 If they focus in the movie on the events of the flight, I can see why it would be better. I'll have to check it out! 8y

I really enjoyed #sully . It was a great read for anyone interested in aviation, and covered much more than just the incredible landing on the Hudson.

By landing safely, flight 1549 returned passengers and crew to the loving embrace of their families. We've all been given second chances. We've been given new reminders that we are loved, and new opportunities to show affection to those we care about.

I've come to realize that my journey to the Hudson River didn't begin at La Guardia Airport. It began decades before, in my childhood home, on Mr. Cook's grass airfield, in the skies over North Texas, in the California home I now share with my wife, Lorrie, and our two daughters, and on all the jets I've flown toward the horizon.

Just started listening to the book this morning. (I want to watch the movie badly though.) Very gripping and fascinating listening to this man's story. However, it has a very defensive tone throughout. Don't mistake me - I think Sully is a hero through and through but I also wish he didn't need to do any defending. #currentlyreading

BethFishReads I was going to skip book and go straight to movie 8y
readingonarainyday @BethFishReads I definitely recommend that! The book is slow moving and actually poorly written. 8y

Grabbed this for a read on a long flight (irony notwithstanding). About halfway through but enjoying reading about this interesting man. Was surprised to learn that with cutbacks airlines no longer provide meals for their pilots and crew. That seems like a really bad policy. I'd gladly pay a bit more for my flight if it gave these very important people a bit more comfort.

neils4fun Finished this. It dragged in the middle but got real interesting when he got back to the event and the aftermath. 8y

After a stressful week and a successful event last night, I decided to treat myself. I was pretty skeptical about this #bookintomovie but I actually really liked it. It's very low-key for the most part, but the plane stuff is well done. The cast, lead by Tom Hanks, is excellent across the board. There's some intensity and a little swearing, but it's got a good heart and message about teamwork that I think all families can enjoy. Three stars!

brendanmleonard I have not read the book it was based on, and I think part of the resonance comes from seeing it in New York on this particular weekend. 8y
TheBookDream This is an excellent option for IMAX in case anyone's curious. Also Union Square! Been by there, but have yet to bite the bullet and check out a movie there. The 4D theatre intrigues me, but I think I would ultimately not care for it. 8y
brendanmleonard @TheBookDream I definitely thought that IMAX would have been good. I did see it on the biggest screen at Union Square, though. 8y

brendanmleonard @Suzze yes NYC prices are freaking cray cray. I use MoviePass where I pay 50 dollars a month for the ability to see 1 movie a day. 8y
Graciouswarriorprincess Going tomorrow to see it. 8y
Suzze @brendanmleonard What a great concept! You don't have to go to many movies to make that worthwhile. I once came in second in the Detroit Free Press Oscar contest, and won a pass to see any movie at any theater in that chain whenever I wanted for a year. I went at least once a week all that year. 8y

So I really wanted to love this book... But the fact that it took 206 pages to actually get to anything about the crash drove me crazy. The only reason that I did not pan this is because once the crash was addressed, it was very interesting. This is one case where I do believe the movie will be better than the book. 2.5 ⭐️

wrenaymuhree Bummer! The opposite happened w/ Unbroken, I thought--movie devoted waaaaay too much time to the boat story, and didn't do the rest of Zamperini's story justice. (Ik--sort of unrelated. But sort of not.😊) 8y
