A chilling historical horror novel set in the American west in 1912 following a Lutheran priest who transcribes the life of a vampire who haunts the fields of the Blackfeet reservation looking for justice. A diary, written in 1912 by a Lutheran pastor is discovered within a wall. What it unveils is a slow massacre, a chain of events that go back to 217 Blackfeet dead in the snow. Told in transcribed interviews by a Blackfeet named Good Stab, who shares the narrative of his peculiar life over a series of confessional visits. This is an American Indian revenge story written by one of the new masters of horror, Stephen Graham Jones.

Picture a small town in the American west in the year 1912. A Lutheran pastor is visited by a mysterious Piegan man, who claims to be a monster who has committed unforgivable acts and requests to give his confession. The reader learns of how this man transforms into a monster and of his subsequent deeds, which are interwoven with the tale of the Piegan people and of the buffalo they depend on. It is a dark tale of suffering, brutality, and revenge

JoeMo This story may involve vampires, but the true horror is the historically accurate tale of the near-eradication of a people, their culture, and way of life. This is a return to more serious subjects and storytelling for Jones, which I‘ve always preferred in terms of his work. You will not have fun or enjoy this reading experience, but it is captivating and it is a work that truly transcends the horror genre. 6d

Friday night splurge. I'm so sad that our indie is moving across the highway in a couple of weeks. I can still get there, but it's a drive rather than a walk (and parking is a pain). I likely won't spend as much at their new location as I have in their current location, but hopefully for them it's a better spot.

Received in my @aardvarkbookclub box today. Have heard only rave reviews, which has me very intrigued. Will probably finish the ILT first. Loved My Heart is a Chainsaw.

The great granddaghter of a Lutheran preacher discover a crumbling old journal recounting the confessions of a Blackfeet man called "Good Stab" recounting how he was turned into a "catman" (vampire) and all the lives he's taken since. But is he really looking for absolution-- or revenge? Incredible work of fiction as always from SGJ. Historical fiction meets horror. I'll include trigger warnings under a spoiler in the comments.

rachelsbrittain TW for racial violence, religion as justification for violence, graphic descriptions of violence including against children and infants, depictions of rape 1mo

I realized I haven‘t gotten an #aardvarkbookclub pick since November! I‘m always iffy on Jones but I said “Hell with it, maybe I‘ll like this one.” 😊 And while I‘m at it, I‘ll try out a monster romance. 🤪 You only live once.
And I skipped #botm again.
