Der Struwwelpeter Merry Stories and Funny Pictures
Der Struwwelpeter Merry Stories and Funny Pictures | Heinrich Hoffmann
8 posts | 9 read | 5 to read
This classic collection of short children's stories has been translated into English. Der Struwwelpeter (1845) is a popular German children's book by Heinrich Hoffmann. It comprises ten illustrated and rhymed stories, mostly about children. Each has a clear moral that demonstrates the disastrous consequences of misbehavior in an exaggerated way. The title of the first story provides the title of the whole book. Literally translated, Struwwel-Peter means Shaggy-Peter. Struwwelpeter describes a boy who does not groom himself properly and is consequently unpopular.

#BookCoverChallenge
Day 119.
Here I will note 365 books (or as many as I will have before I get tired) that have shaped my taste in literature. No explanations, no reviews. Just the cover of the book.
I do not challenge anyone. You are all welcome to take part.

Thanks for tagging me @Yuki_Onna !👏🏻🖤

1. Tagged - I am half German & half Italian, and my German grandparents had all kinds of books around when I was a kid. Struwwelpeter is DEFINITELY a book that takes me back😂 #germantales - You better not misbehave or Struwwelpeter just might get you! ✂️ ✂️

2. Snowy and grey! You don‘t want to leave the house weather🌬❄️

What fresh hell is this?

This book of 19th century children‘s cautionary tales is terrifying. It must be seen to be believed.

Don‘t have nightmares.

wanderinglynn 😬 that‘s terrifying! 5y
julesG One of my first books. Terrifying but a treasure. I know it by heart. It's made me cautious of fire, always eat up, and I've never beaten an animal. I still tend to look up at the sky while walking (sometimes driving). 5y
Angitron We had to read some of these in German class. You‘re right - they are horrifying! 5y

Libby1 @wanderinglynn and @Angitron - I think the drawing I chose is one of the less terrifying. 5y
Libby1 @julesG - wonderful! I wonder how I would have reacted to it as a child. 5y
quirkyreader I always thought that Peter‘s nails were creepy. 5y
Billypar I like the cats in this picture. Instead of darting away, it's like they're rising up with 'Oh my God!' expressions 😺 5y
Libby1 @quirkyreader - they are TERRIFYING. 5y
Libby1 @Billypar - the cats literally cry her a river as she burns to ashes. This book is messed up! 5y

1) can't remember which was THE first, but the tagged book was among the first. I had to learn reading the old German letters because it was pretty much a reprint of the very first edition.

2) Chernobyl and Challenger (6y/o), Berlin Wall (9y/o)

3) red onion syrup for coughs, tea and chicken soup

Have you read this?! "In this book disobedient children brought doom upon themselves in a variety of ways..." says Gustav in The Gustav Sonata, my most recent read. I keep stumbling across references to Struwwelpeter and feel like it's following me around, daring me to read it ??

IamIamIam Oh man, I'm gonna use this story on my 8 year old!!!! 7y
JillR I'm very tempted to get the book to bring out in moments of disobedience @lamlamlam! It truly seems to be the stuff of childhood nightmares though, from what I've seen... 😱 7y
bitterbear I've been dying (💀💀💀💀👻👻👻👻) to reads this!! 7y

JillR @bitterbear maybe we need a Litsy buddyread so we can all face it together haha 7y
TheWordJar I learned of Struwwelpeter in my high school German class. I recently bought a copy to read with my kids, and throughout all the horrific stuff happening to the kids in the book, they were squealing with disgust and screaming with laughter! A great combination! 7y
JillR @TheWordJar I'm sold! I'm going to have to get it! 7y

These books, called Beaverdimes, were sold in drugstores and gas stations across Canada in the 1950s and 60s for ten cents. Some classic kidlit #cheapthrills.
#lyricalapril @Cinfhen

Cinfhen Are these your actual copies? Pretty cool! 8y
merelybookish Yes, they're mine. 😃 I managed to track a few copies down. 8y
