Body of Evidence
Body of Evidence | Patricia Daniels Cornwell
16 posts | 67 read | 7 to read
Another thrilling novel from the bestselling author of Postmortem and Black Notice After months of menacing phone calls and feeling that her every move is being watched, successful writer Beryl Madison flees Key West when a terrifying message is scratched on her car. But the very night she returns to Richmond, she deactivates her burglar alarm and opens her door to someone who nearly decapitates her. Why did she let him in, wonders Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta? And, why is Beryl's latest manuscript missing? Persuing the answers involves Scarpetta in the murder of another writer's jealous mentor. While she copes with a variety of personal and professional problems, Scarpetta's high-tech forensic skills enable her to collect a body of evidence that would mean little without her intelligence, compassion, and imagination leads her directly into a nightmare all her own.

(1991) Second in Cornwell's series featuring medical examiner Kay Scarpetta. The mystery is okay, but Kay's police partner is a homophobic bigot with a heart of gold, which I guess you could get away with in 1991 but is now just .... no. I understand the author herself came out in the 2000s, so I'm curious about her motivation for writing such a character as a hero, but not curious enough to read another.

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm As someone with a brother that could be described as “a homophobic bigot with a heart of gold”, I can‘t say I understand her choosing that person as a hero, but I can understand how it could seem to her like she was writing a real person. I wonder if she was using the character to work through her own inner turmoil of how to view someone in her real life that held the same attitude? 6mo
swynn @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Good question. Maybe ... or maybe she's using the detective as a voice for Scarpetta to react to, expressing a more inclusive point of view. Or maybe she has a redemption arc in mind for the character. I'd be interested to know how the character changes (or doesn't) as the series progresses -- and presumably its audience's expectations change. 6mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm That would definitely be an interesting character arc if that‘s what she does. I‘ve never read this series, so I have no idea whether it‘s worth it to read more. 😅 6mo

I‘m reading this while re-watching Monk and picturing Leland Stottlemeyer as Marino. Also bought my cubicle a festive shrub.

2nd Kay Scarpetta novel is great. A writer is found murdered under suspicious circumstances. as the investigation goes on, Kay‘s office faces accusations of losing the victim‘s manuscript, bodies start piling up and a former flame reaches out while Kay seeks out the manuscript and the murderer.

Is it the Chardonnay or is Skip a seemingly unrelated name to Leslie 😂 although men‘s nicknames have never made sense to me (how is Jack a nickname for John? It has the same amount of letters?)

I'm surprised I didn't review this one the first time I read it but here goes. This is a great follow-up to the first book in the series. We hear about more of Scarpetta's history when old flame, Mark James, suddenly appears. Can she trust him or is he out to break her heart again? 5🌟

Only managed 14 hours completed reading for my first #20in4 but finished 4 books.

I enjoyed the suspense and mystery while appreciating fewer gruesome scenes than her first book. Overall it was fun to figure out all the pieces along the way.

First book of the #readathon is finished.
I may need to read more of the Kay Scarpetta series. Because I don‘t already have enough books to read. 😄

The Color Purple is next on the pile.

Interesting, but sometimes hard to follow. Hints dropped everywhere. Definitely needed to pay attention to catch all the details.
