Shelterwood: A Novel | Lisa Wingate

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Before We Were Yours comes a sweeping novel inspired by the untold history of women pioneers who fought to protect children caught in the storm of land barons hungry for power and oil wealth. Oklahoma, 1909. Eleven-year-old Olive Augusta Radley knows that her stepfather doesnt have good intentions toward the two Choctaw girls boarded in their home as wards. When the older girl disappears, Ollie flees to the woods, taking six-year-old Nessa with her. Together they begin a perilous journey to the rugged Winding Stair Mountains, the notorious territory of outlaws, treasure hunters, and desperate men. Along the way, Ollie and Nessa form an unlikely band with others like themselves, struggling to stay one step ahead of those who seek to exploit them . . . or worse. Oklahoma, 1990. Law Enforcement Ranger Valerie Boren Odell arrives at Horsethief Trail National Park seeking a quiet place to balance a career and single parenthood. But no sooner has Valerie reported for duty than shes faced with local controversy over the parks opening, a teenage hiker gone missing from one of the trails, and the long-hidden burial site of three children deep in a cave. Vals quest to uncover the truth wins an ally among the neighboring Choctaw Tribal Police but soon collides with old secrets and the tragic and deadly history of the land itself. In this emotional and enveloping novel, Lisa Wingate traces the story of children abandoned by the law and the battle to see justice done. Amid times of deep conflict over who owns the land and its riches, Ollie and Val traverse the wild and beautiful terrain, each leaving behind one life in search of another.

Finally got around to reading this Lisa Wingate from earlier this year, and as expected, I really enjoyed it! I did feel that some of the dialogue was a bit TOO expository, but overall I enjoyed this one ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

At last, the temperature has dropped enough that it's comfortable to read on the patio in the evening . . . until warmer days return. I'm thoroughly enjoying 𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐰𝐨𝐨𝐝 by 𝐋𝐢𝐬𝐚 𝗪𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐞 as a participant in another 𝐓𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐦 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠. I received a beautiful hardback copy of the book courtesy of 𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐦 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞.

Before finishing I knew my write up for this slow pick . Good story, but two timelines (1910 and 1990) and I was more interested in the 1990 story and its weaving of history into fiction. The 1910 storyline read like a children‘s (although serious) chapter-book to me and failed to keep my interest. But dang it! Once again, I wish I‘d have flipped to the author‘s note for a greater appreciation of the history intertwined in the 1910 story.

ChaoticMissAdventures Wingate always finds such interesting historical stories people are not telling and dies such a great job researching, I often read her afterwards first! 6mo
marleed @ChaoticMissAdventures I can‘t tell you how often I wished I‘d read the afterwards to historical fiction first. I‘m sure I would have found more intrigue in the earlier story had I done myself that favor. Honestly, even if the afterwards contains a spoiler it wouldn‘t trump realizing the actual history woven within. 6mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @marleed yes! I often need to know this bit to be fully invested in the story. 6mo
