David Baldacci is an excellent author. His books pull you in and keep you until the very end. This one is no exception. It is a very emotional story. A time when things were not good in this country. When people thought it was ok to hate. Kind of like now. Back in 1968 there was a hope for change. Now in 2025 there are those that want to go back to the 60s.

4 Stars • A Calamity of Souls by David Baldacci is a legal drama set in 1968 Virginia, where a racially-charged murder case becomes a pivotal point following the Civil Rights Act. The story revolves around the defense of Jerome Washington, a Black man accused of killing a wealthy, white couple, by a white lawyer named Jack Lee and a Black lawyer named Desiree DuBose. ⬇️
Great characters, interesting mystery, a lot of race relations lecturing but plot generated and on point so not off putting. Recommended for anyone looking for a well paced and plotted legal mystery.

𝐀 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐬 by 𝐃𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐝 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐝𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐢 is a riveting, disturbing, & emotionally unsettling examination of bigotry, racism, & justice. He also explores courage, compassion, tolerance, & more in turbulent 1968 tale that could unfold in small US towns 𝘵𝘰𝘥𝘢𝘺. I wasn‘t going to nominate anything but Audible is featuring the new David Baldacci book, A Calamity of Souls, and I would like to nominate it for #CampLitsy24. I haven‘t ever read any of his work but the description sounds intriguing.
